"Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time."
1,在历史上,很多学者科学家发现的真理往往不被当时的社会所承认,举例:Galileo,Darwin,Denis Dederot的例子;
2,分析这些问题出现的原因:一方面是来自于人类本身,人们不愿意去改变长期形成的固有想法;一方面是由于权威,制度的压制;
Truth, by the definition of the thing that corresponds to the fact or reality,often reveals something unknown to us. I basicly agree with the speaker's point that important truths usually begin as outragous, meanwhile, it will be more and more common that new truths will come more peacefully as a consequence of our socity's democratization and the rights of people to freely talk.
When we keep an eye on history, we will find that a lot of new theory did experience many conflicts, and even were deemed as heresy and evil. Galileo, who despised the learning of Aristotelian, put his questions to the nature instead of ancients ultimately brought the laws of free fall, was unfairly treated with violence by the cytholitics. Darwin, who first decleard that the wide variety of animals was owing to the viariation and natural selection, his truth of revolutionary, challenged the medieval theology and arouse a commotion at his time. Denis Dederot, who vehemently criticized the feudal system and opposed religious persecution, his Encyclopedia suffered from severely coercion and even incineration.
There are two reasons to interpret why these truths begin as unconfortable and even outrageous. The first aspect springs from our human nature. Commonly, facing with the germinal truths which against what they believe, their experience, their ways of life, their methods of dealing with matters, the majority of people will prefer to remain the same as the past and preclude their penchant to accept them. The other reason is that these important truths endanger somebody’s interest and authority. In order to sustain their status not be challenged, authoritarians are tend to these different voices. Cases above like Galileo, Denis Dederot will well explain this. For the two reasons above, new truths always be treated as attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time.
However, the recognization of nature is in a proper sequence. As a concequence of the developement of science, people's acknowledge must envolves a process from surface toessential.And as time goes by, our society is much more democractic and people can more freely express their ideas. That will be more and more common that some new truths comes peacefully. What can be explain this envolves the writer of the best seller, the Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking. Not long after he proved the explosion that marked the beginning of the universe and the birth of space-time itself with the help of the Relativity, this new thology was generally accepted by the society.
In conclusion, though the truths were always oppressed in the past, that was because the particular system of the society then, and even as a reason of human nature. Anyway,things change from time to time, with the society's progress and enrichment of our recognition of the nature, truths will be gradually come peacefully.
