TOPIC:ISSUE 144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
(fanvism, cubism, impressionism)
5 艺术家赋予艺术作品生命而评论家挖掘这些作品的内在价值,正是二者的贡献使艺术作品具有永恒的价值而保留至今。
Who gives the society something of lasting value--the artist or the critic? The speaker obviously considers the former for the reason they give birth to the artic works. However, in my view, the critic also contributes to the great works by evaluating them and discovering their potential values. Thus, it is ridiculous to divide the artist and the critic from their contributions to arts. Without either of them, we cannot appreciate and understand the artic works and the hidden values behind them.
The artists are people who have extraordinary talent, proficient skills and great ideas. They give birth to the works and pin their spirits and hopes into them. From the aesthetic and humanistic angle, they perceive the surroundings carefully and suspiciously and use their brushes or pencils to depict what they see and what they think. Their creativity sometimes seems so intangible that common people cannot understand their potential mind which is contained in their works. Consider the famous painting---Mona Lisa made by Dar Vinci, until now people still cannot completely understand the mysterious smiling. However, it is the mysterious smiling that aptly reflects the greatness of this painting. When people are appreciating the great painting, they were inspired by the theme hidden behind the beauty and mystery, in which the painting expresses a strong arouse for humanity during the Naissance in Italy. Additionally, to a huge extent, the artists strongly express their mental world through their distinctive works. The great musician--Beethoven quickly comes into our mind. From his unprecedented masterpiece--The Ninth Symphony, we heard his voice from his deep heart--to struggle with the fate unyieldingly.
Admittedly, the artist gives life to the great works and makes them enriched with colorful ideas and potential values, nonetheless, without the excavating of the critic, the virtues and values of grand works would be buried by the fleeting time. The critics are people who evaluate the artic works, give their views and comments to the artists and sometimes illustrate the hidden and internal spirits and values of one masterpiece to the commons. They purify the value and life of one artistic work by assessing them impartially. Thanks to their works, the value of great arts will be preserved permanently and its foibles would be abandoned into the historical abysmal. When we take a look at the history retrospect, we could find that many examples of this point. Consider " Don Quixote ", when the saga novel was published, it was regarded no more than a farce at all. Nevertheless, about 100 years later, it has been praised as we evaluated today. From where was the great conversion stemming? One may say the conversion was attributable to the author, the creator of the character of the work. It is true indeed, however, there was another basilic cause hidden in history, and that was the critic. With the critiques of Byron and Heine, the greatness of the work was dug out gradually and became known for people all over the world. Nowadays, readers who prefer the adventures described in the fiction were always obsessed by the funny polt and admire the bravery and optimism of the hero.
We cannot definitely define the critics by their evaluations to artistic works and the artists by their productions of arts. Because in some cases an artist himself is a critic. He adds his views, positions, even emotions into the works by giving the evaluation of them accurately and fairly. As a consequence, the comments from the critics augment the values of artists' creations. For instance, we know some schools of drawing in which express extraordinary and remarkable styles, such as the "fanvism", the "cubism" or the "impressionism", it is the critics who label the distinct styles of drawing that we could quickly recognize them by hearing the styles. Thus, the denomination of the critics has great impacts on their values and characteristics, and also made these works everlasting.
To sum up, the artist created the great works and pint their ideas and spirits on them by which people can be inspired: the critic excavated the potential values from the great works and gave them new meanings. With both artists and critics, we can benefit and enjoy the lasting values of arts. |
