Issue: Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succed.
Answer:
With the ever-increasing kowledge, there are unprecedently numerous majors in universities. Anyone goes to college have to pick a major. The speaker contends thar educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they may fail. I find this statement very arbitrary for two reasons. For one thing, no one can ascertain that whether a student will succed or not in a particular area. For another, students shoud be supported and encouraged to undertake certain fields of study based on intrests and talents. Furthermore, it is educational institutions' responsibility to enable students to develop thier inborn potentials.
To begin with, the assumption hidden in the statement is that educational institutions are able to tell whether a student will succeed in a particular area, which I take leave to doubt, because even one doesn't kown concrete examples( the Director Ang Lee, for instance, who has won three Oscar prize, but was thought to be not a director material by his shcool and his father), one can deduce it from general principles. Lets get down to fundementals and agree that every man is good at at least one area. But no one kowns previously what he is good at until he tries. Hence, before he fails or succed ,no one can be sure about the choice.
