It is through the use of logic and of precise, careful measurement that we become aware of our progress. Without such tools, we have no reference points to indicate how far we have advanced or retreated.

Although there may be other aspects for us to consider about the progress of a process, Logic and measurement are absolutely the most basic and most important tools which enable us to know how far we have advanced or retreated.

Logic shows us the direction of thinking and analysis and helps us to find the key points. Though logical thinking, we know that in order to be healthy, we should have enough food with balanced nutrition and do proper exercise; when we are sick, we should take medicine; we need to do things better and quicker in order to achieve more, etc.

But logic alone isn’t sufficient enough. We also need precise and careful measurement to decide the quantity. We know how much is enough after the measurement of food supply and body consume; how to achieve balance after the measurement of nutrition facts; what and how much medicine to take when we are sick; and how much we can achieve with a measurement of the working hours and the working speed, etc.

With logic and measurement, people have no difficulty in keeping track of the process of their issues, even those seemingly extremely complicated issues.

The company I work for has a whole set of indexes to indicate the market demands, the company’s productivity, its profit and solvency, and even the proficiency of its employees which helps it to make flexible adjustment in sales and production. And the company is prosperous now.

The conception of Three Gorges Dam Project in China had been discussed for more than a decade before it was put into execution. The discussion was mainly concentrated on the prospective advantages and disadvantages of this project, which demanded an enormous logical system of indexes and their measurement. And it was a process of gradual perfection until all factors were considered and measured. Even after the project began, the index system is still a guideline to examine the its progress.

Without measurement on those key indexes, we won’t know how far we have gone in our effort, and we even won’t know whether we have done correctly or not.

I have a wealthy uncle, who has an only son he and his wife treasure very much. They supply him with everything he desires or everything they feel good. In this manner, the kid ingested more nutrition than needed and suffered from malnutrition which made him subjected to attacks of fever. Yet the parents thought he was sick because of the changeable temperature and fragile body and give him even more nutritious food, until at last they went to see a doctor who, after a series of careful examination, told them the true reason.

Likewise, a business owner won’t know how much his enterprise produces and earns each year, so he won’t know whether to go on in this way or shift to other fields. Needless to say, a nation would be in great trouble if it lacks a perfectly logical system of indexes to indicate the situation of all different aspects at different levels such as economics, tourism, environment, population, labor market.

In sum, it is logic and measurement that show us the progress we are making and help us to find the best way of improving. Without them, the life would be aimless and meaningless; the society would be disorderly and hopeless. (556 words)
