In this age of intensive media coverage, it is no longer possible for a society to regard any woman or man as a hero. The reputation of anyone who is subjected to media scrutiny will eventually be diminished.
------正文------
With the development of media and technology, modern reports--despite the depth or scope--are at their most vigorous. You can get the latest news that spear almost everywhere in the world if you want. And it is true that the contemporary people are more interested in scandals rather than great achievements. To afford the larger and lager amount of costs and receive profits as many as possible, most of the common media focus on what the masses are interested in. Therefore, I would agree with the speaker insofar as that the reputations of most of the celebrities will eventually be diminished under the media scrutiny.
To begin with, though heroes are less and less compared with the past, there remain some people who the masses considered as their heroes. For example, the former NBA superstar--Michael Jordan--is still remembered as a hero for many MBA fans, especially who are in the city of Chicago. Another example is Robert Baggio who is a Italian soccer superstar. The former's experience is like a legend. Many times he relied on himself leading his team to the top of NBA. The latter is a hero during the World Cup 1994. He saved the Italian team again and again untill the reach the final match. From then on, many soccer fans have become Baggio fans and thought him their hero. Though both of them have always been under the media scrutiny, their reputations will never be diminished, in contrast, with the passing of time, may enhanced incessantly. The two examples illustrate that our society is never lack of heroes.
In addition, without a doubt, the reputations of most of celebrities will eventually be diminished because of the media and masses' interest. Media have to pander the people in order to gather more profits. Bill Clinton's scandal with Monica Lewinsky is a good example. The former US president were considered as at least a good president in respect of his achievement in job. However, the media's uncovering of his affair with Lewinsky will most likely overshadow his entire administration, let alone be considered as a hero. Not only Clinton, but also many other celebrities have suffered from the deceasing of the reputations. They are often reported to be related with scandals, violence and so on. Once you become famous, it is inevitable to be subjected to media scrutiny. Since no one is perfect, we can belief that most of celebrities cannot escape media scrutiny and consequently be diminished.
However, not all people who are under the media scrutiny will be diminished. An ordinary man's reputation may be enhanced by media scrutiny. And there are also people whose reputations were so poor that media scrutiny could not possibly diminish it any more. Therefore media scrutiny is not always diminishing reputations. It is up to who you are.
In sum, it is no doubt that there are still heroes in our society. And it is certain that not everyone will be diminished by the media scrutiny. Only those who are famous are more likely to be diminished, because the goal of media companies is to receive enough profits. Then the best way to achieve their goal is to pander the masses whose interests is the misfortune of celebrities
