TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.
"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."
To help their graduates in the job market, the president of Mira Vista College suggests that MVC should provide more business courses and more job counselors. He believe that more business and computer knowledge, and the interviewing skills are the essential causes to help GMC’s gradates to find a good job. However the president flaws in several aspects.
Even if assuming that the graduate of GMC is superior in job marker, and business knowledge and the interviewing skills are contributed to this result, the president does not take any evidence to affirm that more business knowledge and the interviewing skills will also achieve the good result in MVC. It is entirely possible that the students of GMC is superior than MVC’s. For example that the SAT/GRE/GMAT score required in GMC is much higher than MVC. Or perhaps that the graduate of GMC have more working experience by their co-op work system .Before eliminating such possibilities, the president can not convince me on his assertion.
Even if the assuming that the graduates of GMC is superior and they have more interviewing skills, the president can not justify that the later is the cause of the former. Perhaps the two fact are just occurrence , not a casual relationship. Or perhaps their business courses and job counselors are added 1 year ago, but GMC’s graduates are always have good reputation among companies since ten years. So the president also can not convince me on this point.
The president also provide a survey to support that the graduates of GMC is superior in job market. However, the reliability of this survey is open to doubt. He cites that 90 percents of graduating senior , in GMC, had job offers, and 70 percents of graduates in MVC who informed the placement office had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation. It obviously is an incomplete comparison. It is entirely possible that 20 percents of graduates in GMC who informed the placement office had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation. For example some graduates who have got a job offer will not informed the placement office. So such statistic can not get any sound conclusion.
The president also based on an assumption that more business courses and more job counselors lend to more business knowledge and more interviewing skills, which is unwarranted. For instance students in GMC prefer literature, history, and other kinds of subject, they will not concern whether the business course have or not. So that means more business courses and more job counselors sometimes can not increase the business knowledge and interviewing skills.
To sum up, the president’s suggestion seems logical, however, to better support his assertion, a carefully justification about the comparability between GMC and MVC is needed. What’s more, the casual relationship between the graduates’ performance of GMC and the fact that they have more interviewing skills. Finally the president need take more evidences to confirm that GMC’s graduates is really superior than MVC .
