TOPIC: ISSUE221 - "The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."

It appears that people in one period of time, such as nowadays, are different from people living at other times, no matter from what they wear, use or do. However, the study of history is to correct this mistaken belief in terms of nature or essence beneath superficial appearance, which is the main benefit.

Modern people living in the 21st century may think themselves are of great difference from people who lived in the 20th century. They wear T-shirt instead of robes and fake hairs; they use cell phones brought with them rather than find a fixed telephone to make a call; they interview candidates through teleconference on the Internet more than costly travel for a face-to-face interaction. Admittedly, all of these can justify the differences of some aspects between people in different period of time as well as social development and technological advancement. However, these superficial distinctions reveal deep-rooted similarity or even sameness after close examination and research in the domain of history.

First, the research of history can dig out the necessary links of some historical events. Fanning out from the French Revolution in 18th French to the Declaration of Independence in the U.S., from the Independence struggle in some colonized countries last century to some local wars, for example, between Pakistan and Israel nowadays, these events have shattered in different time periods and regions or continents. Nevertheless, they are all for freedom and independence in common. This eternal pursuit has compelled people to strive continuously and persistently.

Similarly, the permanent merits also include the need of change. This change means firm bravery to uncertain challenges, and more importantly, ceaseless consciousness to seek more suitable alternatives. It was due to this need that Lincoln has unified all the states of America through the Civil War ; It was this need that Roosevelt has reformed the pattern of economy for the U-turn recovery; It is still this need that Obama has won the Presidential Election last year with his striking and forceful slogan "We need change". This “change” never changes with time changing.

In addition, in scientific fields also shows successive seek for some unchangeable theme. Consider, flying and outer exploration, for instance. From the beginning trial of designing a simple aircraft in the early 20th century to mass production of jets and ultrasonic huge planes nowadays, people never stop their efforts to fly as far and high as possible. Funds of billions of dollars have also been focused on research on outer space, to satisfy people's curiosity but then arouse their more. People’s spirit of adventure remain the same in different centuries and countries

In conclusion, common merits and perpetual pursuits of human beings last forever, regardless of differences of time, races, and nations, which solidify the statement that people in one period of time are similar to or identical as people living at other times in history. History has seen this thus through study of history we can realize this.

另外我觉得你只顾着说优点了，是不是也可以提一下common defects，这样才可以构成完整的人嘛~但貌似这样写由于时间又不能纵向展开了~所以你完全可以坚持你的写法~
