参考了一些东西~改了下208~
TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS: 605
1. 衣着行为是人们彰显个性的方式。(ladies对衣着个性讲究,casual day)
2. 社会价值影响着衣着行为。(DPRK)
We have long been taught that "Never judge by appearance". However, it is the way people look, dress and act that may betray their thoughts and inclination; based on that, even some of society's value system can be reflected.
Dresses, in dazzling, charming or even scaring styles, of any color that one can imagine, no longer simply served to cover our body; instead, they became the way for people to express their aesthetic sense and inner feelings. Escalating number of ladies now is becoming more and more carping at their clothes, not only with the brand or quality, but also with the styles and colors. Fancy clothes hanging in the big shopping malls may not be that attractive to them; nowadays, they are fond of picking up one or two items from hundreds of tiny shops for fear of dressing the same with another because that they believe that dresses embody their unique taste and character. Similarly, modern menfolk have the need to convey their feelings. That is why the “Casual Day” policy which permits employees to wear as casual as they like rather than ties and suits to come to work adopted by many companies is welcome by both female and male employees.
The way people look, dress and behavior, so to speak, are twisted with social ideas and values. The value system affects what they put on and how they do. Take a glance at North Korea (DPRK). Its government implants the idea that the greatness of a nation rests on the brilliance of its leader deeply into everyone’s mind in order to bring the nationals together and form a solidary union. As a result, the nationals are required to wear clothes that are in plain colors. In other words, the whole country is in black or white or grey. Additionally, its people are blockaded from the outside world and have little freedom to do what they truly interested in.
Meanwhile, the change in people’s clothes and behaviors reflect the transition of social values. In the past, women were only allowed to have dresses and skirts. Anyone who dared to put on trousers was inevitably reckoned as a pagan. This notion is still deeply rooted in some Arabian countries. Clearly, such point of view originated from the male-centered hierarchical society. After the Industrial Revolution, women went into the factories, becoming members of the creators of productivity. Though they were still not paid as equal as their counterparts, they began to put on pants and fewer and fewer men reproached this phenomenon. Later, several feminist movements broke out: more and more women requiring same treatment with men. Today, we can see that women from most countries can dress whatever they like. Also, some of them even get higher salaries than men when doing the same job.
Nevertheless, it must be realized that social ideas and values cannot only be revealed by observing people’s clothes and behavior. It is modernization and socialization that assimilate the world. Today, whether you are at the street of Manhattan or Shanghai, people who wear jeans and shirts, eating fish and chips can be seen everywhere. On no account can we assert that the two cities share the same value systems. Under the surface of the similar behavior and clothes, there are many other factors determining the social ideas, like history and culture.
Taking into account what has been discussed above clothes and behaviors are the hind of the social value system. But never expect to fully know a society just by the way people look and act. There are much more elements deeper inside that determine a society’s ideology. |
