TOPIC: ISSUE103 - "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."

The speaker asserts that the study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives. I concede that the study of history is indeed helpful when it comes to our daily life. However, to confine the value of history within the realm of daily-issue is overlooking the impact of history on many other much more meaningful aspects.

Admittedly, we can receive a lot of merits to our daily life from studying history. Present is not isolated as people often think, on the contrary, what is present is the result of the past. We learn from what we have done yesterday and hereby change what we are not satisfied with today. Just imagine a common scenario in your daily life: it is a nice weekend, you wake up in your comfortable bedroom, and then you plan to spend the weekend with your friends a few avenues away from your house, so you dress up, pick up the key and walk toward your car. I should remind you that thousands of years ago our ancestors still lived in caves and your lovely bedroom is the wonder of the study of architecture in human history. And the car you drive is invented by someone a century ago. What is mentioned above strongly proves that what we can surely change our situation and create a better life on the shoulder of the past.

However, to confine the value within the realm of daily life is too limited to ignore the further impact on a broader horizon. History could provide invaluable instruction and inspiration for us to face the challenge we encounter in daily life. There are far more fields that the history also has great impaction. At current time, terrorist has become a common threaten to many countries, terrorist attacks happen everyday all over the world. We shouldn’t ignore that only about half a century years ago, the whole world was trembling with the shadow of fascist. But with the incredible endeavor of International anti-fascist alliance, justice wins the war finally. At present time, an effective way to solve problems like terrorist is to unit as one to fight rather than a collection of individuals with variable intentions. From this angle, the study of history offers us with a better way of thinking about the problems and searching solutions at present time.

In addition, the study of history enables us to predict the future. Most phenomenons exist now has its relation to the past, and the same law goes for those happening in the future with has certain relevance to what see now. Human study the history of certain areas and find these relations what we call principles, equipped with which people could forecast the tendency. For instance, the summer of 2009 saw one of the longest eclipse in China, many people had arrived the best observing place ahead of time due to the prediction of astronomers mouths ago. Without studying the history of astronomical phenomenon through the accumulated descriptions recorded by our ancestors in the past few thousand of years, it is will dubious to make any forecast.

To sum up, the study of history is indispensable for our daily life. Meanwhile human shouldn’t be limited to the things that only relevant to our daily life. Better understanding and in-depth study of history will not only help us to enrich the current lives for ourselves but also help to solve present problems and predict the future.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT211 - The following appeared in a memorandum to faculty from the academic vice president of Waymarsh University.

"So that we can better accomplish Waymarsh University's academic goals, we should adopt the job-opportunity (job-op) program offered at Plateau Technical College and strongly encourage all students at Waymarsh to participate in it. The success of the job-op program at Plateau is evident: over the past two years, more than 75% of the freshmen at Plateau have enrolled in the optional job-op program. Moreover, at Plateau, the grades of job-op students are consistently higher than those of other students, 90% of the job-op students receive job offers within a month after their graduation, and most former job-op students report much success in their careers."

In this memorandum, the academic vice president of Waymarsh University suggest that they should adopted the job-opportunity program offered at Plateau Technical College and strongly encourage all students to participate in it to better accomplish their academic goals. To illustrate his viewpoint, he cities a serious of statics to show the success of the job-opportunity program at Plateau. At first sight, the argument seems to be logical, but further reflection show that the argument suffers form several logical flaws to make it invulnerable.

The first flaw of the argument is that the author relies his conclusion on a incapable analogy. Plateau and Waymarsh are different university, and hereby we are not sure that all circumstances involved are essentially the same. It is entirely possible that Waymarsh is a kind of university aimed at education researchers and scientist and thus there is no need to adopt this kind of program or encourage all students to participate in it at least.

Additionally, the statics the author citied failed to prove the success of the job-opportunity program at Plateau. Most freshmen are lack of experience in university, so they probably enrolled in the program without understanding any information and cancel the program a few months later.
Moreover, the reason why the grade of job-op students is consistently higher is not clear; we can't owe all the achievements to this program without any further survey.

At last, 90% the job-op students receive job offers within a month after their graduation also fails to indicate its success.
If most of these jobs are hard and low salary jobs and many students reject these jobs, we cannot say that the program is a success.

In summary, to make advice more persuading the academic vice president of Waymarsh University need to make what their academic goals are, and thus decide whether this program is suitable. He also needs to make a deeper survey to make sure the real situation of the program at Plateau rather than judging from the statics.
