Issue 11
In the times of globalization, people have paid attention to find out different methods to solve the most persistent social problems worldwide. Under these circumstances, the author points out that it is an effective solution to build a global university to develop students in the process of solving these problems. But I cannot entirely agree with the author, as maybe nobody can be sure that the students at such a university can really solve the enduring social problems, and even it is a truth, there is no need to support such a university, as we can accomplish this through global cooperation.
Admittedly, it is not doubtful that the scholars and students at such a global university can exchange their ideas about the worldwide social problems more freely and conveniently. Coming from different countries and dedicating in different areas, the academics can work together on the same global issue and give different kinds of advice from their own perspectives. Consequently, the students can be built well roundly and analyze the social problems more deeply with broad insights. If this is the case, of course the graduates from the university will benefit the world.
However, this is based on the assumption that all the social problems can be solved on campus, while actually there are so many serious social problems which also call the mutual understanding and cooperation among national governments. Nowadays, the persistent social problems cover the areas of resource, population, and environment, etc. Most of the problems can only be solved at the expense of economic development, which is a sensitive topic of all developed and developing countries. In this case, even if the scholars and students would find out theoretic perfect solutions, it will be less meaningful.
Furthermore, even if we believe the academic accomplishment of such the scholars will be very helpful to address the social problems and the students with well-rounded development will handle the problems easily, we may still wonder whether it is rewarding for the nations to support such a global university. Here my suggestion is there is no need, as modern internet technology has made the communication of long distance possible. The scholars can express their opinions about the same issue through email or internet meetings freely. And global seminars and forma do a good help to enhance the cooperation in academia. Thus, the development of a global university becomes meaningless, as we have already built numerous virtual global universities with the help of advanced communicational technology.
To sum up, although it may be helpful to develop a global university to address the tough worldwide social problems to some extent, it is not encouraged. Because scholars could communicate with the others conveniently, and besides the academic research, the national governments should also have mutual understanding and cooperation. |
