1 科学研究的目的。研究可分为基础研究与应用研究，我们都应对其投资。而资金基础是这些研究得以发展和为人类服务的基础。对科研的经济资助决定了科研的性质和发展步伐。
2 当然，研究也是有两面性的。研究结果有争议是必然现象。而且，我们也确实必须承认科学技术的发展带来许多负面的影响。但是，我们不能只关注于坏的一面，而放弃对研究的投资，从而导致科学技术的停滞不前。
3 那么，如何判定一向科学研究是好是坏呢。这是没有标准的。研究的结果是中性的，能否造福人类要看它的使用者是好心还是恶意。而且，就算一向研究成果可以造福人类，那谁又能保证它是完全正确或是绝对的好事呢？所以，轻率的对一项研究下好坏评判是不
可取的。

What is research? And what is the purpose of the reseaches? Should we provide money for the researches when the result turns out to be controversial? These questions have arouse heated questions in recent years. As for me, I agree with the author's statment and we should spent money on research, let science and technology developing steady and balanced, thus make a good use of them to make a better life. This complex issue need a dialectic analysis.

First of all, we have to think the pricise defination of research and its purpose. Research can be defined as "the search for knowledge or any systematic investigation to establish fact." It can be divided in to two types: pure research--which has indirect benifits but contribute greatly to the advancement of humanity; applied research-- which is about finding out a specific solution to the problem, and often has direct benifis. These are useful for human beings to discovering, interpreting and developing the method of world and universe. To make these findings grown up, develop at a steady pace, and become practical, we need economic support for scitists and their works. Study shows that nearly all the goverments
of developed countires spent a considerable amont of money to research, totaly research funding in most developed countries is between 1.5 and 3.0 of GDP.

Of course, every coin has two sides, and so does research. It is natural for the result of the research being controversial, which is the fact we have to face. After Einstein has found the nuclear power, he also regarded himself as a sinner. Though atomic bomb ended the World War several years earlier,it is one of the dangerous threatens to the world security. Moreover, we have to face and addmit that the advancment of science and tecnology has arouse so many tough problems to the human beings: pollution, resorce shortage, population expansion. But we should not judge the usefulness of research only through its bad effects, or stop funding it, thus retreat the development of the research. What really counts for is out attitude toward the research, to accept it as a doule-edged sword, and make the research play the greatese role in human development.

Then how to judge whether a research is good or bad? Of course, there is not a
definated standard. Every research result and its instruments are neuter, whether it can contribute to human race or benifit to the world lays on the intention of the person who use it. Maginot Line, a serious of concret fortifications made by France against German force in world war one, cost 3 billion French francs, which was extremely strong and highly defensiveness, turnd out to be
strategically ineffective. What's more, even assumeing a result of a certain research can benefit to human beings now, we can not guarantee it is definately something good, or it is profitable to us forever. So, we can never determine quality of a research result facilely.

To sum up, we should invest money on research, regardless whether it will have indirect benefits,or a controversal result. We should keep a positive attitude to all our researches in various fields, and the final goal have to be serve for people.
