147The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."
In the statement above, the author says that the sales of Whirlwind video games will increase dramatically in the next few months according to a survey, which shows that the video game players are most likely prefer games that provide lifelike graphics. And the Whirlwind Company has also introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign.
The statement sounds reasonable at the first glance, but if think it deeply, the statement above have some problems.
Firstly, the statement didn’t show what kind of games the Whirlwind produced before. If the company has been producing the games that provide lifelike graphics since two years ago, and if the designing of the games are still the same level as before, and make no progress or no creation, how can we make the assertion that their sales can increase after two years declining?
Indeed, the survey shows the game players prefer lifelike graphic games, but it’s not only the Whirlwind Company which produces lifelike graphic games, competition can also be an alternative possibility that causes the decrease of sales, other companies which also produce lifelike graphics games may have more gorgeous scenery or more interesting plot, that may attract the game players to buy their games instead of the Whirlwind’s. Feature is just one of the aspects that the players may consider; people may also pursue the wonderful appearance and the splendid plot.
Advertise is a very important way to show people a product of a company, but the content of the advertisement is also important. Did the advertisement interesting? Can it invoke the desire of purchasing of people? The Whirlwind held an advertising campaign, but they seemly didn’t know whether the interaction between the customer and them were good, and if the customers showed the desire of purchasing. After all, advertising is just a way to introduce the products to people, the determination lies in the customers.
Students take most of the rate in the people whose ages are from 10 to 25, they’re not economical independent, and they don’t have enough purchasing ability. They are living on their parents, they can’t buy whatever they want freely. Sometimes parents are reluctant to spend their money to buy their children the video games, they’re afraid that the games will make their children addicted and care less about study. Besides, if the age group which will interested in the games is tiny in the area where the Whirlwind held the advertising campaign, the advertisement can’t get the best achievement.
In addition, the games need up-to-date computers. But not all the people have the up-to-date ones; they may have no enough money to buy it or they’re getting used to their old computers and systems, they don’t want to change it temporarily. They can’t play the games even though they have bought it. It’s waste of money, who will waste the money to buy a useless good?
Overall, the sales relate with lots of reasons, we should consider them all when we want to sell the products, and make a most suitable selling strategy, that can assure of the sales eventually. |
