Some people in this world are called "authorities" because they usually hold the truth. However, they are not always right. Because of this, we have to challenge the authorities.
4 q, D- f5 Q! u) H Like Ptolemy thought that the earth was the centre of the universe, like the Church taught people that they were created by God, even authorities have limitations, so why don't we question them when needed?
7 m# Q' A% S/ z" |" T4 _9 w; _ When Ozawa Seiji, one of three competitors of the first prize of the International Competition of Orchestra Conductors in Besancon, pointed out to the judges that the music given by the competition committee was wrong, he might never thought it was a trick. The judges gave them a piece of music with several mistakes to see if they can say "no" before the authorities, but the other two conductors were afraid to do so, even they found the mistakes. And as a result, Ozawa Seiji won the first prize of the competition. Were those two conductors not good? No, they also had the ability to won the prize, they just lack of the courage to question the judges. So challenge the authorities might lead us to success.
9 V# k5 {6 U1 A& p) e Furthurmore, challenge the authorities represent the spirits of chasing truth and it helps the progress in every area, especially in science. As I mentioned before, Ptolemy and the Church both had wrong theories to control people in that time. Luckily, we had Corpunics and Darwin tell us they were wrong-- sun is the centre of the universe and people were coming from monkeys. These significant discoveries not only gave us the truth, but also change our relationship with the universe and the nature. There is another example to support this.
. H. _; K! O: K2 e# l& [* F Aristotle is regarded as the most important philosopher and scientist in history, and his words also became "truth" that people believe in, including his view that heavier objects, when dropped from the same height as a lighter ones, will fall at a faster rate. However, hundreds years later, it turned out to be wrong by another scientist, Galileo. There is a story of Galileo's experiment on the Leaning Tower of Pisa, saying that it was a shock to the witness to see the two dropping balls with different masses reach the ground at the same time. Though the story might not be true, Galileo did questioned Aristotle's view of gravity in his work, and his theory became the base of Law of Free Fall.
7 ]- m; k/ r$ @6 Z In conclusion, we should question the authorities. So when you hold the truth, dare to say " the authority is wrong", because the one who hold truth is the authority. |
