2Governments should offer a free university education to any student who has been admitted to a university but who cannot afford the tuition.
Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position.

Usually, I often hear some poor students with good academic potentiality, such as high GPA and good leader ability in the extracurricular activities, have to drop out of school for the expensive tuition. As for them, this is really an attracting suggestion. But when it is implemented, there are some limits of the policy and I believe it should be modified to some extent.

Firstly, why the government should pay the education fee for every qualified student, especially the poor? It is the responsibility of government. As we know, without the support of people, the government could not stand for a long time, such as all kind of taxes are offered by the common. Thus government should do something for us and offering the equal education chance is one of the significant actions. The students with good academic potentiality are not supposed to be rejected from the university. If they are not supported, their poor life condition is not easily changed. For example, without systematic major training, it is hard to work on the complex machines and only could do some simple operation. So it is not easy to get a job for the un-education people, especially at the time of economic depression, which leads to poor life. As for them, the support of government is significant. You may argue that more job opportunities to them should be given by the government. But I think it is far from enough. More education chance should be offered so that the poor people could broaden their mind and learn the latest knowledge, which improve their competitive strength. Only in this way could enhance their possibility to obtain a decent job in the future.

When it comes to the practical application of the policy, some shortages come out. Firstly, the limit ability of the government should be realized, without enough money to support every qualified student for the university education. If this policy is implemented, student would be more easily admitted to university, because the government will pay for them not university. Then more and more people will go to university to improve their ability, especially at the present economic crisis. But the support from the government is limited. Secondly, the free education does not mean the good education. After the policy carried out, increasing students will study in one university. But the education source in one university is limited. For example, the number of teacher, classroom and student’s apartment will be in shortage. One of the possible solutions is that more students study in one classroom and one teacher guide more students. But it is no doubt that this will decrease the level of education. Last but not least, how to judge “the poor students”, who do not need to afford the tuition. If every one knows the good news, it is no doubt that more and more students will declare that they are poor.

The policy should be modified to make it more effective to help the poor students. First, not every poor student should be offered a free education in a university. The rank of university is supposed to be taken into account. The better the university, the better potential academic ability of admitted student. I suggest that there should be one proportion of the offer by the government to the poor student. As for the better university, the chance of admitted will be lower and then the proportion should be higher. Second, the total offer number of the government should be fixed, then the load of the government will not increase after the policy implement. This is equal, because the source is limited and it is just for the most qualified people. Finally, one committee should be set up to evaluate the standard of the offer of free university education, which should evaluate the quality of the applicant and the economic condition of the applicant.

The idea of the policy is good for the development of the education in one country, which offers education chance to more students. But it is not perfect, and the actual situations should be taken into consideration. If my suggestion, mentioned above, is accepted, the effect of the policy will be better.

3
Educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers.
Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position.

It seems persuasive that the policy will do favor for the students. If they are encouraged to study in the good careers, it will be easier for them to earn more money after graduation. But does this is really good for their career development in the long run? I doubt about the effect of the policy.

To begin with, it is a useful suggestion for the student to find a good job. If the “lucrative career” in the sentence means “good salary job”, I agree with it. If students are guide to study in these fields, they could prepare the field for four or more years in the university. Then they could obtain systemic major training and firm major foundation. If they could offered enough work experiences at this time, it will be better for them to get a decent job in this field after graduation. What’s more, if the university has a firm relationship with some companies, their students may be booked in advance.

But I doubt about the responsibility of the university, which is just offer a good job to students. I believe that one university should teach student “who you are” and “what you can be”, but not “just do one job”. Besides, “lucrative career” could not be taken place by “good salary job”. Job could be lost, but career never once found. If in the university students could not be taught the potential and the interests of themselves, it will really trouble for them in the future. For example, usually some people often complain that the job is so boring that they could not bear it any more. Then they keep change a job from time to time. If asking the interest of them, they usually answer that nothing could attract them. I can guess they may be such students in the university who were guided to choose fields with good salary job, but never told to find the interest of them and learn how to manage their careers. Now they have to find “who they are” and “what they can be” in the work. But it has wasted lots of time and energy. What’s worse, some people may waste more time to solve these problems and once they begin the really suitable careers, they may find the energy and time is not enough for the new beginning. At that time, they may complain about the form university education greatly for the misguidance.

In addition, it is beyond the responsibility of university to encourage the student to choose certain fields of the study. Every student has different characteristics, interests and abilities. The learning fields and future careers should be chosen by themselves, not the university. Besides, only based on the lucrative careers, the choice standard of fields of study is not good. One of results is that more and more students will choose the “hot” fields, which could offer good job after graduation. Then some subjects have little student, which may be shut down soon. Firstly, it is a pretty bad news for some “cold” fields, such as history. Secondly, if too many students study in the same fields, the education level will be lowered for limited education resource. Final, it is hard to find job for some students since the number of students is over the number job offered in the “hot” fields.

All in all, the university should not help students to choose the field of study, but let them choose by themselves.

7. Some people believe that the purpose of education is to free the mind and the spirit. Others believe that formal education tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free.
Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.

What’s the meaning of education? The above two views reveal opinions varied from people to people, which show the different idea about the original goal and actual effect of education among people. As for me, I believe that we are supposed to be able to think freely after good education, though the details of education process are varied.

Firstly, we could be taught to think about ourselves, the society and the nature world after good education. “Where are we from?” are one of the essential questions, which has confused our forefathers. After the learning of Darwinian Theory, we could find the precise answer. Besides, after learning about the history and politics, we find the past of human beings and how is the society organized. Furthermore, when the nature science subjects are systematically learned, such as mathematics, physics and chemistry, we could begin to solve tough problem by math, be able to explain the world and make full use of the nature laws to serve ourselves. But in the long time ago, without good education and just little knowledge about our human beings and the nature, our ancestors never expected to explore the world as freely as present. When in trouble, they could only resort to the God. However, it does not help them. Final, “God help those, who help themselves” is founded as a proverb to live by. Thus, without good education, it is hard to recognize the world, let alone think freely.

When it comes to the formal education, however, some students always feel boring about it. They always complain about the rigid teachers and boring classes, with endless homework and examines, which causes them to play truant. Maybe this is the reason why some people argue the formal education is just to restrain our mind and spirits. Is this true? Just to some extent. But the essential of formal education is to train the student systematically and let them lay a firm foundation in the major. Due to the increasing volume of knowledge, no one could remember and digest them in one class. Students have to review them, do lots of homework and take part in the all kinds of exam after class, which is just to lay a firm foundation for the usage of knowledge. I don’t support that these activities are harm to think freely, on the contrary, they are vital to set mind and spirit free. For example, as an engineer, if you do work hard to digest the major knowledge seriously, how can you expect to the complex engineering problems easily. Thus without firm education, it is hard to solve the actual problem, not to mention think freely.

Now the problem is how to achieve the goal of education more effectively, at least less boring about the formal education. Firstly, the level of teaching should be required. Teachers, who are not qualified to the job, should be asked to improve as soon as possible. One of the key standards is to let student love to his or her class. Secondly, students should be guided to find their interested subjected as early as possible. Let the best teacher “interest” help student to accept the formal education. Maybe in these ways, the original goal of education could come true.
Just do it!
