According to the speaker ,it is a responsibility for every individual in a society to obey just laws and to disobey and resist unjust laws. I approve, to a certain degree, individuals do should obey just laws and resist unjust laws sometimes. However, I also appreciate the opinion that individuals may have no that responsibility in some cases.
On the one hand, just laws benefits the society and all individuals in the society and thus, we should obey them. There is no doubt that just laws have our society stable and in good order. With this beneficial condition, we individuals could live a peaceful and happy life and reach our dreams. For example, traffic laws help keep the traffic in order and protect our safety. Without the safety it provide us, we may have traffic accidence, not to say realize our goals. As for the society, without these laws, the society itself cannot make progress and the individuals in a society cannot be ensured a happy life. Since just laws bring us that many benefits, individuals should obey them for themselves and also for others.
What is more, it is clear that we should resist unjust laws in some circumstances. Since justice is our everlasting pursuit , it is unreasonable for us to keep blind to those unjust laws. They are trying to destroy our goals, so we certainly have to protect our dream and our future. In addition, the past history has demonstrated that compromising before these laws could only bring us tragedy and suffering. Or it is more serious that the compromise may bring our society backside. For example, the massacre of Jews not only took pains to Jews but only destroys the economy of Germany which harmed Germen at last.
On the other hand, obeying just laws and resisting unjust laws may be impossible in some cases. After all ,the definition of just laws varies in different countries and it changes with the time. No one could provide a everlasting definition of justice. In that case, it is impossible for individuals to discern whether a law is just or not sometimes. For example, some countries forbid study cloning and define it evil but some contributes do not. Then it is difficult to determine whether the law is just. Additionally, the justice varies for different people. For instance, if one have to compensate me a lot of money for his mistake, I may think the money is too little while the one thinks it is enough. If so, I may agree that the law is just while the man do not.
In sum, whether every individual in a society should obey just laws and resist unjust laws varies in different circumstance. Therefore, to be objective and fair, we had better decidedly remove our one-sided views. And only in this way can we realize the nature of laws. |
