137) While the Department of Education in the state of Attra recommends that high school students be assigned homework every day, the data from a recent statewide survey of high school math and science teachers give us reason to question the usefulness of daily homework. In the district of Sanlee, 86 percent of the teachers reported assigning homework three to five times a week, whereas in the district of Marlee, less than 25 percent of the teachers reported assigning homework three to five times a week. Yet the students in Marlee earn better grades overall and are less likely to be required to repeat a year of school than are the students in Sanlee. Therefore, all teachers in our high schools should assign homework no more than twice a week.
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

The article argues that all teachers in high schools of Attra should assign homework no more than twice a week because such a measure works efficiently. Well, I find this argument is based upon several assumptions, which critically need to be clarified. The implications of those assumptions would strengthen or weaken this argument.

The first assumptions which need to be addressed are that less homework makes students works better all subjects in that surveyed school and would works as well in all other schools in Attra. 可能，在那被调查的学校，少量作业只对数学及科学有效，对别的学科不会有效；而且，由于学生的自主能力及具体情况不同、由于家长对孩子教育的投入不足、当地社会及学校对教育的关注度不同，这种教学方法对别的学校不一定有效。

The critical assumption need to be addressed is the teaching situations in high schools of Marlee and Sanlee are the same. 也许，在M，所要教学的内容在课堂上已经完成了，所以不用太多的家庭作业，而在S，课堂上没完成任务，所以得多布置作业让学生回去加强。也有可能，M布置作业的次数少，但一周布置的量总的加起来比S的多

To Chris,

我感觉你focus在了这个Survey上面，所以会觉得有一点困难。
个人感觉其实它的assumption还蛮多的，比如：

1. Nationwide survey中S和M（SM...ETS是故意的吗）的实验结果是适用于Attra的
2. 这个survey的覆盖是全面的，所有调查老师都是如实reported
3.SM两地的学生除了assignments的安排外，其他条件都是相同的
4.（这个我不确定）M市剩下75%的老师安排的作业都少于一周3-5次（因为从字面意思来看并没有提及，但我不知道这个算不算钻牛角尖）
5.作业数量是越少越好——即便少一点的作业有助于提高成绩，即便这个survey适用A州这所高中，调查中是3-5次，建议里变成了no more than twice

我觉得你提的4、5 稍微有些不太恰当；
对于1、2、3，
1确实很关键，同时题目中的结论是all teachers, 但好像并不是每个学科都有效，这两个可以一块儿写
3可以用来分析考试和升学
