Issue136: 490 words 60 minutes
The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare.
1、 来自法律、文化、道德等等限制了选择
2、 在民主社会,选择是一项基本权利
3、 日益进步的科学技术,给人们带来了更多的选择
Is the circumstance without choices always rare? Some scholars may don't think so, as they believe that there are too many constraints from the legislation, culture, morality and so on. However, as far as I am concerned, the circumstance without choices is rare, because it is a basic right to choose in a democracy society, especially the highly developed science and technology give us more alternatives nowadays.
On the one hand, it is true that many criterions from legislation, culture, morality and so forth limited the range to choose from. During thousands of years' evolvement of human beings, many standards have been agreed on and built up to assure the perennial solidarity and stability of the society. Therefore, any choices that break through these standards will do harm to the whole interests of society, and definitely should be prohibited. For instance, some scientists want to carry on projects of cloning human ourselves, which will cause a serial conflicts with the moral, culture standards most people holds, maybe chaos in society. And many countries have prevent these experiments through legislations. To this extent, the circumstance of choices is limited, as the choices objected with the social standards will be prohibited.
On the other hand, it is a fundamental right for human beings to have the freedom to choose in a democracy society. It is well acknowledged that, from the Independence revolution to the war for emancipating the black slaves, the establishment of a democracy society is a process to pursue the right to have the freedom to choose their own life styles. As a result, it is obvious that every one in a democracy society could have the freedom to choose what they like, including life styles, jobs and religions etc. For example, many women have the rights to choose any job as man do, such as pilots, which once were merely occupied by men.
Furthermore, many great innovations created by the highly developed science and technology enable the contemporary people to have more possibilities and chances to choose. Many inventions in communication and transportation nowadays, such as cell phone, Television, plane, train and so on, have provide us more alternatives and greatly improve our efficiency, while in ancient times, if we want to see and talk to somebody, no other ways were available but to walk to him. Particularly Internet, one of the greatest inventions in 21 century, offers a new attractive opportunity to apply many traditional industries, such as tele-education, tele-medicine and E-commerce. So with the highly developed science and technology providing more and more choices to achieve our goals, it is rare to have no choices.
To sum up, although there are many limitations from various respects of the society, without breaking through those criterions, we still can enjoy the basic rights of having a lot of choices endowed by the democracy society, and the highly developed science and technology also have boarded the range to choose from. |
