PhD position – The role of arginine methylation in gene expression
Location: IMT, Philipps-University Marburg, Germany
Description: A PhD student position is available at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Tumor Research (IMT) University of Marburg in the laboratory of Uta-Maria Bauer. The DFG-funded position is available for 3 years with possible extension.
Our research focuses on the characterization of the Protein Arginine Methyltransferases (PRMTs) in gene expression and DNA repair. PRMTs comprise a family of 11 members in mammals, which catalyze mono- and di-methylation of arginine residues. Previous work has shown that PRMTs play a fundamental role in the regulation of chromatin structure and gene expression. Like other histone- and chromatin-modifying enzymes, they function as transcriptional co-regulators and control important cellular processes, such as proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. Deregulated activity or mutation of these enzymes is associated with the onset of cancer and other diseases.

We offer a challenging scientific and educational programme comprising training courses, seminar series, specialized workshops and ongoing assessment of progress and success of the PhD project.
Qualifications: We are seeking for a highly motivated candidate, who holds a M.Sc. or Diploma degree in any life sciences. Participation in teaching Biochemistry to medical students in German is required.
Salary details: Payment is according to the German E13 TL-V / BAT IIa (50% for PhD positions).
