TOPIC:ISSUE 241 - "An individual's greatness cannot be judged objectively by his or her contemporaries; the most objective evaluators of a person's greatness are people who belong to a later time."
WORDS:466          TIME:0:43:45          DATE:2005-12-10

The speaker asserts that whether a person is great needs to be assessed by the people who belong to a later time, rather than his or her contemporaries. As far as I am concerned, I agree with the speaker although sometimes we can see some contemporaries give right assessment to the great man.
To begin with, some great men's accomplishment can be understood by the people who lived in the same time, so they can not recognize the great achieving men. That is to say what they found and did surpass the contemporaries' mind. As case in point is the DengXiaoPing who is believed to be the designer of the innovation of the China. After China experienced serious revolutionaries in cuture for ten years, The Chinese lived in a serious poverty .Facing such a bad condition what way is a proper way for the China to solve the present problems DengXiaoPing made his decision that we should create special religions  and be open to the outside world to attract foreign investments. This thought conflicted with most people's mind during that time, because people always believe we should solely rely on ourselves to develop .But in current view it is a successful thought .So some great men's achievement can not be understood by the people at that time

In addition, due to social condition in that time people can not assess a great person in a objective way. The people who belong to a later time can recognize them in a objective way without limites. For instance, the Copernicus' great finding can not be supported by the individuals at his time. Copernicus found that the sun is the center of the universe, rather not the earth which is a basic opinion before him. In light of most of the people believing in the god, he did not announce his thought to the world after three years when he created it. After his theory public all the people asked to burn him. However In current sights the theory is right, In fact at that time some people approve his thought, but they can not do it due to the condition at that time.
Admittedly, some great men can get the identification from the contemporaries, such as Thomas Edison who invented the bulb and bring the light to the humane beings and Hodgkin who manufactured the vitamin B12 and Penicilin which are used to cure lager numbers of people's lives.
In sum, given the above offered facts which render some instances of the great men it is comfortable to reach the conclusion that some great men's achievements can be approved and some cannot be recognized by the people who live in their time and can only be identified by the later persons due to the time's limit and confining minds of the people, but the great man can always be recognized by the human beings if they can bring the happiness and truths to the world.

TOPIC:ARGUMENT 6 - The following was written as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.

"A jazz music club in Monroe would be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local market all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide study indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money."
WORDS:384          TIME:0:30:00          DATE:2005-12-10

In this article the author cites the market condition of the jazz club, a national study about the jazz and other evidences related to the jazz to defend his conclusion that the C Note will make money .At first sight it seems reasonable .However careful scrutiny reveals various alternative explanations and logical problems which make it unconvincing.

To begin with, the author makes the assumption that the C note will have the market of the jazz due to a simple evidence that the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away. It is possible that there is only a jazz club because the local people are not interested in the jazz, so no jazz club opened there. It is also possible that some musicians do not want to play in this place .In short without ruling out these alternative possibilities we are not convinced on the basis of the only evidence that the nearest club is 65 miles away.

Another point worth considering is that on the basic of these facts that over 100,000people attended Monroe jazz festival last summer and the radio programs air every week the author can not infer the jazz's popularity in Monroe. Perhaps due to people's immediate interest they pay a visit to the jazz festival and after it they find nothing, so they decided not to attend it. As for several well know jazz musicians live in Monroe the author provide no evidence to substantiate that they are wiling to take part in the local programs. Since the article fails to account for these alternative possibilities the author can not make his recommendation sound.

Finally by relying on a national survey to support the conclusion that the people who live in Monroe will spend large numbers of money to the jazz the argument depends on the assumption that the level of the Monroe reflects the national level .Perhaps although local people like the jazz .they do not want to invest on it .In short the argument is wholly unpersuasive on the basis of the assumption that the condition locally can reflect the national level. In fact even if all the evidences are right it can not guarantee the club will make profits, because a lot of factors function.
In sum, the assertion that the C Note can not help but make money is untenable, in light of a variety of alternative possibilities. To strengthen it the author must provide a accurate survey about people’s attitude to open a jazz club. To better evaluate it we would need more information such as whether the people locally are inclined to the jazz and are wiling to invest to it.
