Issue208 "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

Do people’s look, dress, and act provide a way to recognize the values and ideas of the society which people live in? I concede that it plays rather a vital role in perceiving the social value sometimes; however, it is no use to observe the appearance and behavior of its people in other situations, while at the same time there seem to be more than one other methods of knowing a society's ideas and values.

In some aspects, the appearance and behavior of its people is just a sign of what there society is. Their wearing reveals social merit while they act indicating view of community. Considering the transverse dimension, different countries and regions with various idea of its society shows discrimination in their people’s wearing and acting. Such as in western countries, especially France, people always wear at will, and accordingly perform bravely. You could see hot kiss at subway or street and any places they like. It is France, a romantic open country, as you guess from the appearance and behavior of its people. On the contrary, in some Asian countries, which are not so open, people will rarely do what French do in their country. Referring to the time dimension, knowing a society’s characteristic by looking at its people’s appearance and behavior also appears to be a good way sometimes. Take China for a striking example. In feudalistic society, people would like to hold braid no matter they are female or male, indicating blindness and innocence of the society; when it first come to democracy, they always worn sun yat sen's uniform or something like that with single color. Until the new country built, the institutional revolution restrained people’s look, words and act again; after the reformation in 1978, a most wide and true freedom realized at last. People may talk, ware what they like without fear any more, by which we could reach the merit of the society in nowadays.

But under other situations, the way people look, dress may provide us with a feint, thus make judging by observing appearance and behavior of people become easy to mistake. For example, we often judge a person by their clothes and regard the luxurious representing the higher class people and the shabby indicating the humble ones. However in fairy tale Cinderella could become the prince’s wife; in reality lots of famous people are poor at first, such as the famous president Lincoln who was born in an impoverished family. So, our eyes is not always dependable.

In addition, apart from observing the appearance and behavior of its people, we could also turn to other ways in order to find out a society's ideas and values. For instant, medium is perfect way. Like in American, Reuter and advertisement in Madison Avenue is so flourish that any words is permitted, even the disclosing of Presidents’ scandals, which give us a signal that the American society is really free enough. Another fit example is law of countries. As is know to every, death penalty is banned in some countries, while it is permitted in other ones. And the former countries seem to be more respecting human rights.

In a word, to some extent and in some situations the way people look, dress, and act surly reveals the ideas and values and the society they live in. However, it is not the one and only way we could turn to, and is not always effective.
