TOPIC:ISSUE 147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS:481          TIME:0:46:13          DATE:2006-1-18

As the society is developing faster and faster ,tradition--which mean the old values, cultures and way of life-- and modernization--which includes urbanization, industrialization and democratization-- seem to conflict with each other more and more acutely. However, in my opinion, these two elements in fact are not incompatible and one can and should try to melt them into a whole.

Admittedly, in some conditions tradition seems to contradict with the modernization. Those kinds of traditions almost have the same characters: old-fashioned, behindhand, ridiculous or even barbarous. For example, in the Middle Ages of Europe, anyone who obeyed or just suspected the church was sentenced to be burned at the stake; in ancient China, women were commanded to adopt footbinding which caused great physical and mental agony. When the human civilization has progressed, people have realized the innocence and blindness among those feudalistic actions, which leads to the innovation on the democracy and nomocracy. Also in the field of science, new ideals and techniques spring up day by day to replace primary ones. As a result, due to the conflict between modernization and tradition, human society can progress continuously.

Nevertheless, tradition and modernization can not be split into two pieces. The basic link between them is just like the foundation and the skyscraper: modern ideas and values is build upon the knowledge of past experience (this process may be defined as "regeneration"),so every new idea and value could never break away the limit of their ancestors. The cite of laws would properly proves this: the American society today is based on a well-organized legislation system, which is derived from the old English rules hundreds of years ago. Although the old ones are no longer used, many of their spirits are still effective nowadays: the equality among the citizens, the indispensability of punishment, the demand of a powerful government and so on. So, as we are used to accept the modern thoughts and techniques, we are unknowingly choosing to assimilate some valuable old-time concepts in the meantime.

Accordingly, to better serve our society, we must learn to unite these two factors together, rather than reject either of them. This process will do good in many current fields. Like in the field of music: many cultures have their own special music which are enjoyed by a small group of people thus are in great danger of extinction. If added some modern elements of art (like the electric instruments, some newly developed expression skills) with the prerequisite to preserve the sole of the tradition, old music would relive into a fresh interesting form -- just like the jazz which comes from the African traditional music. Therefore, the old and the new can acquire great benefits from each other, and we could improve our creativity by choosing both of them.

Therefore, to create a more civilized society, we should turn our attention to how to mingle the tradition and modernization together, rather than waste our time to argue which single one to choose.

顺便问一下:issue的段末句可不可以对本段内容作一升华?多些指正!
