TOPIC: ARGUMENT117 - The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.

"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

The author asserts that the office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of Valu-Mart stores based on some evidence such as the increasing of work at home from a recent survey. Actually, this assertion is soundless and need to be reevaluated.

In the first place, the premise of the argument is that the home office machines of office-supply departments in Calu-Mart stores will have impressive sales due to the increasing of work at home. Actually this premise is unreasonable. Though there is the trend that most people are required to take more work at home, we cannot say that they need more home office machines. It is entirely possible that these workers have enough home office machines at home and they do not need to buy any more. And since the survey did not provide the worker’s working character distribution, it is hard to say that most of those people who would take more time to work at home need only office machines, maybe they need more other kinds of machines which do not belong to the office-supply department.

In the second place, the arguer unjustifiably asserts that the office-supply departments will become profitable. Even if the increasing of work at home makes that the home office machines become best sales, the office-supply department cannot assure to be profitable. Because the office-supply department not only include home office machines but also something like enterprise office machines. If the latter one cannot be sold well, the department may not be profitable. In addition, the argument arbitrarily increase the stock of supplies such as papers, pens and staplers is reasonless. As we all know, this kind of stock is very common and maybe the market has been saturated.

Finally, the evidences of the argument are insufficient and the conclusion is opinionated. The survey does not supply to what expand it was conducted and how many more people are required to take work at home relative to the past. Moreover, even if the office-supply department will be profitable, it may not be the most profitable one. The performance of other departments of Valu-Mart stores determines the rank of the performance of office-supply department.

Therefore, to convince me that the office-supply department will be profitable the arguer should provide a more detailed survey which should include the distribution of the workers who are required to take work at home and other information on the market shares of office machines of Valu-Mart stores.
