TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

In the modern age, watching television is becoming a widely spread and useful way to learn knowledge. But in my opinion, we can not say that book reading is not as important as it once was. Only the combination of television, book, and some other ways can provide us the most valuable way of learning.

I concede that watching television is a good and important way for us to learn. As television programs can bring us vivid pictures and friendly remarks, it can help us to learn new knowledge, especially the knowledge associates with spacial feelings. A program from the discovery channel can give the middle school students a wonderful class about the life of a tiger in India, which is far better than a book's boring description. Similar advancements of the television-learning can also be found in nearly all the cases if only the case has a strong relation with human-being's spacial feeling.

Though when certain knowledge is associated with human-being's spacial feeling television-learning is much better than reading books, book-learning has its own advantage in education which television-learning will never catch up. At first, books can give us accurate science definitions, theories, etc, and they are what we can use to testify a science problem. Every one of us has to concede that modern science is build on some fundamental definitions and theories, and without them, the whole modern science system will collapse. But watching television could not give us an accurate definition or description of a complex problem, or at least, not as accurate as a book.

The disadvantages of television-learning can also be found in the aspect of convenience. We can easily take a book on hand so we can read it anywhere if we want, but television-learning is not so convenient, we should wait for the broadcasting time of certain appropriate programs at home, just in front of the big black heavy box-the television. And if you forget something learning from a book, you can easily find it out before your book shelf. But if you forget the knowledge which you get from a television program, when it is the time for rebroadcasting!

In sum, in modern society, people can learn much by watching television, especially when the knowledge is strongly related to our spacial feelings. But due to the importance of accurate science definitions, theories and the convenience of book-reading, learning from books is as much important as before.

But in my opinion, we can 用that is  not say that book reading is not as important as it once was.
