I agree with the assertion that the arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) disclose the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Moreover, in my observation, the arts also show the personal feelings and thoughts of the artists.
To begin with, the arts reveal the hidden ideas of a society. In some situation, the common people might not announce their ideas publicly and the art woks can do this for them. Take the painting of Picasso as an example. When Spain was under the reign of Nazi, the Spanish were angry with the Nazi and hate them, but none dare speak out. Therefore Picasso painted a abstract painting of the bombed city to show the hatred of Spanish people. In short, the arts can disclose the hidden ideas of the society.(简洁明了,比我的那个例子合理多了!)
Furthermore, the arts always represent the prevailing ideas in various forms. Art works have many forms such poem, music, dance, play and so forth and they always reflect the society in which they are produced. For instance, during the great revolution in France, the La Marseillaise was composed to encourage the soldiers to fight against the king for freedom of the common people. People can know about the thoughts of the people devoted to the revolution and even the society condition through this famous song. For another example, many plays in past year in China tell stories about the development of economy and reform of industry in the country. Through these works, people can have some idea about the determination and confidence of Chinese people to develop the industry and make a better country. So, all kind of arts actually show the thoughts and belief of common people in society.(这段也很好,论述合理,用了CHINESE的例子,很好)
Besides showing the ideas of the society, the arts often created with the personal feelings and thoughts. No matter they wish or not, artists have to bring their subjective emotions into their works because nobody can be absolutely objective. And many works are characteristic due to their authors' special feelings and thoughts. For example, the sunflower, a painting of Vincent van Gogh, with extraordinary bright light shows the genius’ passion and firm belief of art. For another example, Beethoven, the great composer, had composed a great many symphonies. Through these masterpieces, he expressed his love to life and his faith that achieve victory by struggling with difficulties as he did himself. Thus, art works are always expressing the feelings and belief of the artists.
In sum, the arts can reveal the hidden ideas that most people fear to speak out and prevailing thoughts of the society. Besides, the arts are able to express their authors’ emotions and thoughts which give them characteristics
