Issue39.The intellectual benefits of attending a university or college are vastly overrated: most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for years than by pursuing a university or college degree

Education is one of the key words of our time. The purpose of education is one and only that enhancing the character of individual, but the measure of education is variety. Through studying in a university or a college to get degree should be the way of most people would choose. There’s anther way that someone considered: most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for years than by pursuing a university or college degree.

When heard that someone gain a big achievement without the traditional education, we always deem that was a miracle, at least small probability happening. Obviously, people attach importance to education only the traditional education and ignore that self-study can also achieve great success. There are three advantage of people who achieve success by self-study distinguish from the ones who given the traditional education. First, it is huge amounts of time that self-study student can control, in sort, call their soul on their own, and this is the most difference between self-study and traditional education. Certainly, students in university or college also have a lot of time, but not enough, especial while meeting the favorite subject, they can not spend all their energy on it. Second, in self-study, they can choose the subject in which they most interest, and don’t care the score of the elective subject. Unfortunately, undergraduates need to study lots of elective subject whether they like or not to gain enough credit hour. Third, it is the strong ability of analyzing and solving problem that autodidact hold, since, autodidact need to affront, pander and revel out every difficult alone in the self-study process.

The system of traditional higher education, the university and collage is the core, lasted hundreds of years, and nowadays every country put the education as a key to the future gate. There are two advantages of the traditional education, which can be concluded in studying part and living part. On the one hand, the undergraduates can learn not only the specialty subject but also the elective subjects which are useful at the specialty subject or enhancing the character of individual. So, the undergraduates are educated more comprehensively than self-study. On the other hand, by living and studying together, the students in the university enhance the ability of communication, harmony and cooperation, and they all know that individual only a part of the group as a footstone of the skyscraper. Having this concept, they can adapt the new condition soon, when the students graduate.

Comparing two measures of education, don’t care the prejudice in social, only think the effect of them, we can easily find the advantage and disadvantage in each means. By the self-study, people like challenge, have more ability to face the hard work, and are omniscient, in their favorite field. But all people like that have some flaws, such as too narrow what he learned, lack of the competence of communication and so on. Through the traditional higher education, every part abilities of a person are enhanced, but this popular measure may not explore all the potential of a genius.

To sum up, it is no doubt that studying in a university or collage is applicable of most people, for it lasted hundreds years as the first choice of higher education. To individual, the self-study is more likely fit for the one who has high ability of self-control and can not explore all the potential by the traditional higher education. It is not simply right or wrong that the means of education is, and it is one and only measure of testing the means of education that whether the means fit for the individual.

不考虑社会对于自学成材的偏见，只考虑两种受教育的方法最终获得的效果而言，自学，有一些问题：1。自控能力2。学习面窄3。与人合作能力
大学教育作为数百年来人类受高等教育的普遍途径其适用性不容置疑，对个人而言自学也不失为一种可行方法。
