TOPIC: ISSUE196 - "Technology creates more problems than it solves, and may threaten or damage the quality of life."

There are certainly lots of problems caused by technology, such as traffic gas, mass destructive weapons that will diminish our quality of life or even threaten our lives. However, I disagree with the speaker's assertion that technology creates more problem than it solves, because this issue ignores the great progress the technology bring to us which truly improves the quality of people's life.
  In modern society, technology may be the most important element of the development, which frees us from heavy labors and makes our life more comfortable and convenience. Take digital technology such as telephone, computer and internet for example, they provide plenty of convenience to our work and life. With the help of them, businessman could easily attain information of the market he need which will help him to make immediately response to improve their production and service to gain more profit. If the children wonder the information of other countries and other cultures, they can seek elaborate instructions in form of characters, pictures or even videos from the websites which is a difficult task for even an expert to achieve decades of years before. And it is benefit for the children to extend their spectrum of vision. For scientists, new computer with high speed in calculation makes it possible to simulate the condition which is difficult to reach or will spend lots of money. Then it will help to solve many difficult problems and reduce the expense.
  However, every coin has two sides; undue relying on technology will lead to disaster and threaten the quality of life. For example, the broad application of machine does relax the heavy labor of people, but it also causes another problem. For the same work, we need fewer persons now, so lots of workers lose their jobs which indeed reduce the quality of their life. For another instance, automobile plays an essential role in modern traffic, and it makes the travel of people more convenient than ever before, but it also brings some harm for us. Then gas exhausted from the cars causes serious pollution to the environment, and the huge number of cars often causes traffic jam which in turn makes people’s travel inconvenient.
  It is unfair for us to deny the importance of technology only if there are some problems created by it. In fact, whether technology makes more benefit or harm is not decided by the technology itself, but is decided by the way we use it. Such as the application of nuclear technology, in one aspect, it solves the increasing requirement of energy, but in another aspect, nuclear weapons seriously threaten the security of people. Then we cannot come to the conclusion that nuclear is dangerous because the people who use it is more dangerous than nuclear itself. In order to reduce the problems caused by technology, the best way is not to fear the technology but to give a proper leading to the people who apply it.
  In sum, although technology creates some problems, it greatly enhances the quality of people’s life. Lots of harm is indeed caused by the way people use it, so through proper leading, technology will make more desirable contributions to the progress of society.
