TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 611 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2007-8-6 12:21:15
The speaker contends that only by those who live after them but not contemporaries, could the greatness of individuals can (去掉)be decided. In my observation and experience as a college student, I agree with the author since the greatness of individuals could be evaluated from the contributions they made to society. Although there some contributions made by individuals could be well acknowledged by contemporaries, in most cases they must withstand the test of time.
Admittedly, it is many cases that exist in history about those great people were well acknowledged in their time. If only those contributions which people make to society are significant, important and could be seen the immediate useful effects, could the greatness of creators be readily accepted by their contemporaries immediately. For example, Mozart who contributed many great compositions was well acknowledged in his time and then most of his works were disseminated through all over the Europe. And another example for illustrating this point is the story of Mark Twain. As a writer in his time, he received many famous and became householder name because of his significant on novel creations which were always the booksellers bought by their hot contemporaries fans. Thus, the greatness of individuals could be highly evaluated in his time if they created significant contribution to society.
However, it is true many contributions must go through the test of long time before their values and impact could be recognized mostly on account of two reasons.你这里写的不是2个原因,是2方面,一个是思想不被当代人认可,一个是理论和发明不被人所认识. Firstly, because some ideas, creations and brainchildren are too advanced to realize, accept and appreciate. One typical example is the experience of Van Gogh. As a painter well known in these days, on contrary, he could not be recognized by many people because his new creation of abstract methods in painting, which was a revolution towards tradition. After decades, until the populace realized the value of abstract works, could his painting eceive highly recognized and applaud and then the auction price often breaks history record. Hence, without enough far-sight and high appreciated knowledge, it is impossible for contemporaries populace to readily accept the great and new creation contributed by great individuals.
Moreover, another reason for the no consciousness of the greatness of individuals by contemporaries because most discoveries and theories are more advanced to apprehend or accept by contemporaries and then they must go through the scrutiny by the science committee by a long time, in most cases, it may be decades or centuries. Take the Magellan for example, he traveled around the earth a time and then claimed that the earth was a global, which greatly challenged the traditional opinion that the earth was square. As a result, with few people understanding and supporting came from his contemporaries, he confronted many jokes and condemning from the populace. Another representative example is the new theory about evolution established by Darwin. After he declared his thought about the evolution was the result of natural selection, which challenged the Christian religion about the all living creatures were all created by God, he received not understanding but the punishment and condemn by contemporaries. So, we could find that lacks of knowledge and limitation in visual field, could result in the inapprehensive or misunderstood opinion about the discoveries and theories although they may evaluate great contribution in nowadays.不错
In sum, although the contemporaries could recognize some greatness of individuals by evaluating their contribution, in most cases, because of limiting visual field and lacking knowledge, many greatness must go through the test of time and then be acknowledged by later generations. If only those contributions are useful and meaningful for our society, their significant value would be highly evaluated sooner or later.
