TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

In the era of rapid change, there is growing concern over the complex and controversial issue of whether the significance of watching television has outweighed that of reading books. In my point of view, I accede with the speaker that due to its certain advantages, television does play a increasingly crucial role and even take the place of books under some circumstances in this modern and accelerating society, while reading books is still indispensable for its unique characters.

Firstly, and fundamentally, with the technology developing so fast, the appearance of television not only provides us a more vivid but also more temporary way to gain information from the world. To begin with, the image on television gives us a much deeper impression by the means of stimulating both our sighting and hearing. For example, Olympic Games can never been described in detail while television is able to present every specific to the audiences. The same condition can also apply to an outstanding performance, an accident scene and etc. Secondly, television offers us more up-to-data information regarding the entire world. Thirdly, an individual's imagination is also can be spurred by some kinds of television programs such as Science Exploring, which offer us a hint to follow to imagine various natural phenomenon. Besides, the effect of television is so marvelous that it can even bring a certain event into the attention of the whole society.

However, compared with those advantages of watching television, reading books has its own benefits and can never been replaced. Most importantly, when an individual has the motive to read book, he can control the speed and content of reading while TV, on the contrary, is in an passive way. For instance, one can repeat reading those which he has not had command of or even review them in the future. In addition, those abstract objects such as the motion of human can only be recorded through literal words. So do those axioms on mathematics, physics and so forth-such character is a good indication that reading books is a more ideal way which is aptly designed for every individual to learn.

Moreover, having recognized that the advantages of television and books respectively, we are aware of the fact that through the combination of these two means can make our lives and studying more efficient, more vivid and more in-depth. For example, we can depend mainly on books for knowledge and absorb vivid information from television. Fortunately, thanks to the developments in technology, internet is likely able to serve as a perfect combination of reading books and television.

On balance, without television we lose a vivid and efficient way to gain knowledge, news and entertainment; without books knowledge will rest on the surface forever. We should strike a balance between the two means and utilize them to serve better for us.
