TOPIC: ISSUE189 - "If people disregard the great works of the past, it is because these works no longer answer the needs of the present."

Does the precursors' great works become more and more senseless as time passes? Under some circumstance, I agree that many great works of the past can not solve many problems of the mordern scoiety. However, I can not agree with the assertion that people nowadays disregard these great works merely because they are useless.

When considered in the realm of natural science, it seems that the mordern technology is so highly developed that the old machines are gradually outdated. Many people superfacially think that the mordern technology has nothing to do with the great works of the past while it definitely can not be the truth. It is on so many great forerunners' shoulders that technology improves little by little. Without the the general and special relative theory, we still live in a society without atomic bomb; without the work of Corpenicus, we still possibly believe that earth is the only center of the universe.

When it comes to the realm of politics, it is even obvious that these great works have a great impact on how the politicians nowadays behave. Most famous politicians are being read and analysed by their offspring. Their thoughts can influence what the readers think. Wise politicians will try to avoid making the same mistakes and inmitating the wise decisions made by their prodecessors. Thus it is unwise to undermine these influence of the works of the past.

Notwithstanding the importance of the great works of the past, many people are still disregarding them.  The reason may lies in many aspects, not enough emphasis of the national education system, or the bad social environment for cultivating people's awearness of others' works,  or prehaps it is simply because these great works are not well public educated. The disregardness of the great works of the past may bring about many serious social problems. People become more and more egocentric, and they do not learn to appreciate the great works  of others. Causing the whole society show little respect to these who really contribute to the society.

As to us students, we need to has a knowledge of what the predursors have done to make our living more confortable and learn many valuable spirite from them. And we must not only focus on a single area, we need to know scientists, politicians, religious people of the past. Only by examining the past can we find what we are different from the ancient society and what we are similar to the ancient society.

The great works of the past keep on tolding us many useful knowledge. To some point it may be true they can not help solve many the mordern social problems, nevertheless it does not mean these great works are only use to add memory.  Our government need to pay enough emphasis to make the public awear the importance of the past when people intend to forget them.
