It is often asserted that the purpose of education is to free the
mind and the spirit. In reality, however, formal education
tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free.

Issue
Some nowadays argue that, instead of freeing our mind and
spirit, the formal education tends to restrain them. This
statement seem sound at first glance, however, further
reflection tells us that formal education should not be
responsible for the restrain of our mind and spirit.

Formal education probably always played a key role
in the learning process. It is only through formal
education we can study the subjects such as science,
humanity and formal education systematically and
effectively. By such way of learning , we can grasp
much knowledge we don’t know before which
inevitably will broaden our horizon, and we can
also develop lots of abilities such as thinking,
reading, and writing. Our mind and spirit can be freed
because of the enrichment of our knowledge and ability.
Take philosophy for instance, after the systematic
study of philosophy, we can get the basic concepts
of human life and the way to think by ourselves,
thus, we can try to solve some problems such as
“What is the meaning of life?” And without the
formal education it is impossible for us to finish such
task.

The reason why some argue that formal education
restrains our mind and spirit lies in that they think
the formal education means “learning by rote”.
But I consider that the definition of formal
education should be replaced be that “students
and teacher learning together in the classroom”
And it is the teacher’s obligation to instruct the
students not to learn be rote but to think creatively.
If the students’ mind and spirit is repressed, then
it is not formal education’s fault but the teacher’s.
For example, when it comes to the study of
French Revolution, the teacher should not just let
his/her students just recite the time, place and
pivotal-figures of this event, he/she should
instruct students to cogitate some thoughtful
questions, such as “What effect does French
Revolution made on economy of France?” or
“Why Napoleon not others is crowned?” If
one student can reflect such questions by
himself/herself, it is sure that the student’s
mind and spirit can be freed under such a
way of learning.

In sum, due to above discussion, we can
safely arrive at the conclusion that formal
education doesn’t restrain our mind and spirit,
in contrast, if used properly, it can broaden our
horizon and free our mind.

responsible for the restrain of our mind and spirit. (This statement seems sound at first glance, however。。。这种巨型不宜出现在ISSUE,只适合argument,因为issue给的题目都是伦理性的,不是那么容易就可以下结论的)

Formal education probably always played(建议用一般现在时) a key role in the learning process. It is only through formal education we can study the subjects such as science, humanity and formal education systematically and effectively. By such way of learning , we can grasp much knowledge we don’t know before which inevitably(这个词略有贬义,建议换个) will broaden our horizon, and we can also develop lots of abilities such as thinking, reading, and writing. But I consider(没有I consider这种说法,还是I think吧) that the definition of formal education should be replaced be that “students and teacher learning together in the classroom” And it is the teacher’s obligation to instruct the students not to learn be(笔误,应是by) rote but to think creatively.

If the students’ mind and spirit is repressed, then it is not formal education’s fault but the teacher’s. For example, when it comes to the study of French Revolution, the teacher should not just let his/her students just(just一词在一句话中就重复了,不太好) recite the time, place and pivotal-figures of this event, he/she should instruct students to cogitate some thoughtful questions, such as “What effect does French Revolution made on economy of France?” or “Why Napoleon(最好补个but,表示对比) not others is crowned?” If one student can reflect such questions by himself/herself, it is (最好补个for)sure that the student’s mind and spirit can be freed under such a way of learning.

In sum, due to above discussion, we can safely arrive at the conclusion that formal education doesn’t restrain our mind and spirit, in contrast, if used 这个结尾也是典型的argument式的,呵呵,你弄混了。
我觉得文章写的很好,语言都不错,论证也到位了,再把劲可以得高分。就是还稍微浅了些,有点像托福作文,没有独特的,学者式的看法。
