题目:ARGUMENT188 - A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required, whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition, researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women.

In this argument, the arguer concludes that kappa opiods should be prescribed for women and men should be given other kinds of pain medication, in addition, he recommends that researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women. To substantiate his conclusion, he provides a survey of a group of people as evidence. However, this argument is unconvincing for several critical fallacies of it.
First and foremost, merely based on the report, the recommendation that researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications is unwarranted, because the report only suggests that men and women experience pain differently from one another. There is no evidence to demonstrate that their other experiences are dissimilar, not to mention that it is necessary to reevaluate all the medications. Lack of this crucial information can surely undermine the arguer's recommendation.
What is more, the survey provided in this argument is problematic. The number of the samples is so small that it can not fully represent a large number of people. Furthermore, we are not informed with the details of the survey. Perhaps the diseases of the men are far more serious than the women, thus it is natural that men suffered more. Moreover, it is entirely possible that the food the women take is different from men, everyone shares the belief that difference in food can lead to a variety of results. A proper diet can make an individual more strong and healthy. There is also a lack of definition of feeling much less pain. Common sense tells us the feeling of a person can be totally different from others due to a myriad of factors, such as the different brain structure. In a word, the survey is too vague to be meaningful.
Finally, it is necessary to mention that kappa opioids is a kind of medicine. Therefore, it is likely that it has unfavorable side-effect. In the argument, the arguer fails to provide any information to show that kappa opioids is not harmful for people's health. Therefore, the prescription of kappa opioids is susceptible.
To sum up, this argument lacks of credibility. If the arguer considered more possibilities and provided more information and evidence to rule out the possible factors out, the argument would be more logically acceptable. |
