Issue 88
"Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics."

The speaker claims that the development of technologies would change our society both in customs and ethics. I agree insofar as the technologies are powerfully influencing our daily life, and they make it possible for us to do and think something we never dreamed before. At the same time, however, we shouldn't ignore that some serious consequences it would bring when our ethics merely depends on the technologies rather than our believes.
To begin with, It's indisputable that the development of technologies do have great influence on social customs and ethics, each breakthrough of technology triggers the transformation of our customs and ethics. With regard to customs,technologies make us act in unprecedented ways. Consider, for example,the only way that we can connect with each other before telephone
was invented was writing letters,which had maintained as a custom for hundreds years in human's history, but now,  more and more people choose to phone others rather than write letter  to them, for the telephone bring us a more convenient way to contact and change our customs in communion. These influences on customs we get from the technologies not only happened in communication,  but it happened in all aspects of our lives, such as travelling far away by mordern transportation, sending E-mail through Internet, taking knowlege about someplace from TV instead of going there. All these changes of customs were owed to the development of technologies. With regard to ethics, the open minds caused by development of technologies also make us accept some ethical concepts which we have spurned before. Like homosexual, which was regarded as a immoral and sinful thing before, now is accepted by more and more people. In short, technologies deeply influence our behaviors and thoughts both on customs and ethics.
Now that there are so many advantages we get from the technologies, does it mean we should regard the trend of technologies as the orient of our future, and bear anthing which in favor of the its development. The answer is definitely no, especially in ethics. Let's consider the example of clone in heredity, which has been argued long period on whether it should be applied to human being. It is a feasible step in some scientists' eyes, for it can definitely take the science forward and maybe bring us a excellent human race. However, can you imagine what a formidable consequence it would bring when two creatures who have equal characters not only in surface but also in inner heart appear in the world. Which one should deserve to own the relationship with his family and friends ?  Which one should be abandoned though he has the same memory about the same family and friends ? For the reason that these terrible aftermathes in ethics far outweight the benefits we get from the technologies, we should never make our basic ethics bend to the development of technologies.
Moreover, although what we have discussed above indicates that to a large degree technologies could change our customs, there are some traditional customs which are regarded as emblematic behaviors of our cultures shouldn't be effaced by the technologies' advancement. Such preserving-deserved customs as Christmas, Valentine's Day, Chinese New year, and other
conventional customs handed down from one generation to another. They are so important for us to save our cultures and religions that we should protect them from being ruined.
In sum, It's undoubted that the development of technologies can bring us convenient, efficient life that would transform some of our customs and thoughts, but when it comes to the  relationship between these influences and ethics, we should never fly in the face of the latter one and just pursue high technologies.
