50.In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.
The view that integrating the theory into the practice is a most effective way to acquire knowledge has received accolade from the public. Based on the point, the author appeal all faculty in colleges and universities to spend time working outside the academic world in professional relevant to the course they teach in order to enhance the quality of education. Although his strong desire is laudable, a hasty and unpersuasive decision may prove counterproductive at last regardless the differences among academic disciplines and the objective conditions of the colleges and the universities as well as that of the faculty.
Before proposing any concrete measurement, there is one point must be clarified that it is the attribute of a subject that determines the effectual teaching method. Only the mode of teaching which matches the knowledge structure of the subject can get a desired result. Although no identical discipline exist, all of the academic disciplines, in the light of different knowledge systems, can be divided into three fields: physical science, social science and human science. Thus, styles of teaching should be chose according to the classification.
So whether the author's suggestion is advisable must be analyzed by considering the features of the three categories. Below is my analysis.
In terms of physical science, the idea can contribute to the equality of instruction. Since natural science is a kind of descriptive knowledge about the nature, which must be justified or falsified by the practice. So it places emphasis on hand-on skills. When the faculty translate the theory into the reality, they can have a deeper understanding about the knowledge and ameliorate their knowledge systems so that they can give satisfying solutions to the problems asked by students. Take computer science for example. Students could benefit a lot from the teachers' sufficient experience gained outside the academic world because the practice broadens the teachers' horizons. In addition, the creativity of the teachers can be improved and the creative and innovative thinking of the students, in turn, can be inspired. Clearly, the advice seems attractive in physical science.
Then turn our attention to social science. The subject, featured as analyzing the current social conditions and predict its tendency, relates closely to the accumulation of the social knowledge and the society's development. Through doing some researches about the social events, conducting an investigation into social phenomena and so forth, the teachers can not only improve their knowledge but also impart the knowledge to students in a more vivid and impressive way when showing their achievements in class. For instance, with reference to economics, the learning effect would be much better if the faculty apply theories to the cases of financial meltdown to which they have devoted his time and efforts. Therefore, on the principle that social knowledge comes from the society and must be applied to the reality, it is worth of adopting the author's idea in social science.
However, the proposal doesn't fit for human science. Compared with the teaching, human science focuses more on the introspection and comprehension of students by themselves. As a result, the proper approach to teach is the communication of thought between faculty and students, which students are better enlightened. So given this, the measurement that all faculty should be encouraged to work outside the academic world seems not to make a difference rather than waste teachers' time and energies. Instead, communion discussions, communication conferences and seminars should be encouraged by the faculty in the field for a higher quality of instruction. So the opinion seems unthoughtful in terms of human science.
Finally, the necessary precondition must be pointed out that only the colleges and the universities, in which their resources of teaching are rich, their teaching tasks are not very heavy and the teachers have superfluous and time and energies , can take the advice in physical science and social science. Without the premise, it's dangerous for colleges and universities to rush headlong into the suggestion. At that time, what is waiting for them is a decline in quality of education, let alone the waste of time and efforts from the faculty, for they reach for what is beyond their grasp. Thus, it's wise for colleges and universities to evaluate their own objective conditions before any action.
In sum, colleges and universities could try to call on their faculty in physical science and human science to work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach on the premise that surplus resources of education are hold.
