TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.

"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

In this argument, the arguer concludes that we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skills Mira Vista's graduates find employment. To substantiate this claim, the arguer provides evidence that at nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers, the arguer also manifest that only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study at Mira Vista College last year. At first glance, the argument might be somehow reasonable, but close scrutiny reveal that this argument is unconvincing.

In the first place, the arguer provides the fact that at nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers dose not support the claim that we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skills Mira Vista's graduates find employment. It is absolutely possible the number of students of Mira Vista College is much less than Green Mountain College then hire additional job counselors must wash the resource of college. Maybe, there is no sense in offer more courses in business and computer technology while the culture direction of Mira Vista College have little to do with commerce and computer. Without ruling out such possibility, I can not accept the arguer's point.

In the second place, the arguer manifest that only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study at Mira Vista College last year is insufficient to conclude that we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skills Mira Vista's graduates find employment. There is likelihood some of the graduates do have liberal professions as job for there major suit it and there are more avenues for employment in this major at Mira Vista College. Therefore, offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors is unreasonable and the argument is unconvincing.

In the third place, different colleges have different condition we can not contrast simple in a nutshell. We must adjust measures to local condition. If offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors lead to the declining of quality of education as the Mira Vista College Green has less fund and well-staffed than Mountain College. Thus, the argument cuts no ice.

To sum up, the arguer's conclusion about we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skills Mira Vista's graduates find employment is not well supported as it stands. To bolster it, the arguer must provide more powerful evidence what mentioned above.
