TOPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
The statement actually consist of two claims. First, laws are of two kinds to us : just and unjust. Second, every individual in a socirty has a responsibility to disobey and resist unjust laws,or at least obey just law.As far as I'am concerned, I basically agree that not all laws are nodultly just, but I persisit that resisting the law is not a most important responsibility to a member of society.
First of all, orders and peace of a society is needed, which requies broadly admitted and accepted by most peole. For individuals, only when everyone sees obeying the laws as essential responsibility and ethic, there can be a possibility of harmony society. If laws accord with the above standards, we should obey laws. If laws no longer benefit the majority of the citizens, but do harm to individuals, everyone in a society need to disobey and resist unjust laws. For instance, during the American Civil Rights Movement, people recognized laws are unjust, tried to resist it to get equality, ultimately contributed to ending racial discrimination. And laws today are more just.So it is necessary to resist laws which are out-of-date, to protect people's rights.
What's more, the claim that there are two types of laws which devided into just or unjust ones are not accurate. A society needs a system of law to ensure the benefit and wellfare of the majority of its people, which due to deminish the goods of a small part of groups or individuals. As a result, just or unjust laws is just a respective concept judege by different people, like the ban against chaoxianxxx on researches on nuclear weapons, the UN punished North Korea for the international peace and harmony, but North Korea deemed this law as unjust. That's to say, most of the times, "unjust law" to some ones is espacially important to protect the whole interests and harmony of most people in our sosiety.
However, it has to be admitted that laws are always imperfect , which call for continuely editted and renewed with the development of socoety anf democracy. Even if a law is actually tabled as an unjust one, the best and most important massure is anything but resisting against it, which brings about conflicts and struggles but not suggestions and expierences. There are numberous of solutions to improve them, for example, Martin Luther King gave lectures and appealed to the mass and medias to fight against the unfair laws' discrimiation to black people in US, and it came out to be success to adjust the laws.
For what has been dicussed above,we can safely arrive at the conclusion that no law is absolutely just or unjust. In some respects, laws must be forced upon in order to ensure security and interests of the majority of people, while in other respects, laws should be flexible enough to satisfy individuals as many as possible. So individuals need to be more rational to judge laws and should take more rational reactions to unjust laws. |
