244. Most societies do not take the greatest thinkers seriously, even they claim to admire them.
Undoubtedly, when reviewing world history and function which the greatest thinkers had or has played, it is not difficult for us to find out that thinkers in different countries in varied times were encountered with multiplied treatments with surprising disparity. Some of them left aloof with their brilliant ideas, others got zigzag life trajectory was not supposed to because of their staggering minds. As a result, it is said that greatest thinkers are naturally paid attention at the prime time of their minds. However, it is, from my vantage point, only part of the story. Of course greatest thinkers sometimes couldn’t have themselves listened and valued by society. Those who owned unique ideas unacceptable to the mainstream of ruling likings more or less were ignored or humiliated by dominant thinking usually left alone from others. Often, to some extent we agree to the point that great people are prone to be lonely and solitary, difficult to be understood by their peers and society. In other words, societies do not take them seriously. Especially when authorities in society were challenged by aggressive ideas produced by brilliant thinkers, severe punishment could be taken to warn thinkers from disseminating ideas, influencing others, unstabilizing fundamentals of society. Take Martin Luther Kin for example. It is a testament to the greatness of Martin Luther King that nearly every major city in the U.S. has a street or school named after him. It is a measure of how sorely his achievements are misunderstood that most of them are located in black. The white-dominant society then claimed for equity but refused to eliminate the race demarcation. The main population at that time did not credit more applause than today to his struggle with complexion discrimination. However, not all societies all the time consider greatest thinkers without seriousness. When we review the history, successors afterwards always has a verified saying in judging thinkers’ greatness. Civilization development has more than acknowledged his significant behavior which shed light on modern society’s trace of advancement. It is true that due to some certain historical limits, the whole society would value little on great thinkers’ spiritual contribution, which however, it is not the end. A great number of thinkers are active in effecting trajectory of social development and altering the direction of human’s civil trail. Examples are plentiful at hand such as Deng Xiaoping, one of the greatest leaders in China as well as in the world, is widespread recognized as a powerful thinkers worldwide who had liberal spirit, meanwhile he implemented creative ideas into practice resulting in overwhelming success not only in economical meaning but also social and legal progress. Chinese people both in the past and at present have thought highly of him because of his innovative ideas of the open door policy and economic reform. His mentality has been taken seriously and supported by populace. In conclusion, there are a number of great thinkers who are not underestimated by the whole society, at least not everyone. Although some certain greatest thinkers has little influence on society they lived in and people did not place much emphasis on their ideas, world history in terms of philology, sociology, science and etc has been shaped by ideas of great thinkers and prompted by their attempts and contribution. Even though some of them did not gain admiration at their moment which was supposed to, their profound impact on civilization development can’t be denied and would be revalued by offspring to learn lessons.
98. In any field of endeavor——the science, the humanities, the social sciences, industry, etc——it is not the attainment of a goal that matters, but rather the ideas and discoveries that are encountered on the way to the goal.
You might be consoled by your friend saying that it is not the attainment of a goal that matters, but rather the ideas and discoveries that are encountered on the way to the goal when you’ve failed to achieve your goals after long-term endeavor. Although it works well sometimes in making depressed people feel better but it is not always the truth. It may be similar as we consider more macro matters widely from discipline development to industry construction. In the first place, the universal guideline to assess either people’s potential or any field of industry competitive strength nowadays is one’s tangible achievement which is tantamount to result. Businessman tries his best to make profits by quickening capital mobility, students cast about to pass exam and get certification as soon as possible to get a good job, industry field is keen to improve production rate by updating technology. Academic fields also pursuit visible results as production of publication and its impact factor, professor, which is recognized as elegant career, is not free to this judgment category. It may be the very reason why modern people seem more or less eager for instant success and quick profits. The poisonous milk power event in China——producers chastened after high-profit by making unqualified milk——is the immediate response to result-driven society. Nobody can deny the fact that result is of importance no matter in whatever field. Even to the country, every its endeavor requires its result such as friendship resulting from cooperating with other countries, influence and saying rights resulting from long-term economic construction. I’m afraid that there is no one appeals to go through all process and get nothing in the end. Secondly, set a goal, to some extent is equal to expecting result, and make schedule are of great significance. Firstly, goals make people do their job effective and fruitful. With a goal, one can make a practical plan scientifically and attain the result efficiently. Lyubishchev, a famous entomologist had written a great deal of books on evolution, agriculture, scientific history etc, regretted in the end of his life that if he had set a more ambitious goal, he would have achieved more than he actually did. Besides, without a goal, according to the psychologist, people would lose their zesty and abandon their dream on the half way much easier. One with a goal and persistence would find himself or herself encouraged and inspired driving by the specific expecting result. Nearly every productive person at the beginning of career has an object. Like Brother Wright, who invented airplane from numerous experiments in the spirit of their original goal. Finally, ignoring the result might get rise to distraction. Unless focusing on an expecting result, people would be distracted by interesting discoveries and ideas emerging during the process which could prevent you from achieving meaningful goals. It is not unfamiliar to see people with wide interesting excel in nothing. Admittedly, on the road towards the result, valuable experiences might shape people’s idea, enlighten people’s mind and horn their mentality. In some cases, we would encounter with unexpected but exciting findings during the process. Many inter-disciplines as well as new disciplines are created by the process of certain theme research such as socio psychology, biochemistry, socio medicine, etc. However, in whatever field, development is weighted by results and their contribution to reality. If people in any field care little about results, obsessed by ideas and discoveries now and then in the process, they wouldn’t enjoy it in the long run and the certain field would see its ending not far away. In conclusion, result is at least mattered the same as the process. Considering the material benchmark of society and the advantages of results-driven approach, I firmly believe that result should be mattered as well as the process. |
