Do Arts only reveal or hide ideas about society?
Arts including literature, music, painting, film etc are hard to classify as all of them could be an accumulation of both personal emotions and social ideas. Generally, they can be rated by two kinds, one is the reflection of society both reveal or hide opinions about society, and the other has nothing with society just conveys personal feelings or imagination. Therefore, it is arbitrary to conclude that arts reveal or convey thoughts about the world.
First, let us focus on the first kind of arts that express or imply the real circumstance of society. These art works originate from the daily life and social life, revealing people’s love or hate about things around them, as people in the world are influenced by families, friends and teachers day after day. So much recognition is formed in the brain that people have the impulse to communicate them in another way, such as novels, paintings, music, poems, all of which are called art styles. Those works that have affected people profoundly are passed down throughout the history of the world. Take poems for example, in Tang Dynasty of China, a series of poems by Bai Juyi is familiated to the citizens. His poems mostly come from the common people's life, such as Sanli and Sanbie , which described farmers’ poor life and press by controllers, disclosing the anarchy and cruelty of the contemporary government. The reason why his poems are quickly recognized and loved is that these poems have close relationship to people’s life. As the paintings to be concerned, it is also commonly recognized that many famous paintings and sculptures in Renassism period are characteristic of contemporary life. Such as Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, many of their works have relationship with the church.
Much more examples of social relationship can be found in the literature, especially the novels. Most novels are depicted upon true stories, no matter love, war, political or social stories. Gone with the Wind, a novel about a girl named Scary—daughter of a landowner in southern America, fight for her life during the America War. This novel is known to the world for the painness caused by war and people’s strong characters against the difficulties. This is a typical case of socialism novel. In China, a Red Dream of Mansions, written by Caoxueqin in Ming Dynasty, is a cyclopedia of feudal society. It takes the love story between Jiabaoyu, Lindaiyu and Xuebaochai as the axis, and goes far beyond the love story; instead, the writer depicts a lot about the detailed novel life, inner minds of each kind of person, exposing the hypocrisy and cruelty of feudalism and decadence of the ruling class.
Except for the above, arts, sometimes are just flow of personal creativity rather than social reflection, especially in the music and paintings and some literature. Different with ordinary persons, artists own unique perspectives and rich emotions. Hard to communicate with others, artistic expression is the best way in this case, so occurred the pleasing or gloom music, abstract
pictures. Many love songs, such as To ELIS, Moonlight composed by Beethoven, are characteristic of personal feelings. Paintings of lover’s portrait just communicate a person’s love. To literature, some fables and legendaries are people’s desire and beautiful hope for life.
In conclusion, some arts come from the reality, reflecting reality and communicating author’s recognition of the society. While some art works merely disclose author’s inner feelings, and have nothing with outside world.
