In the long history of human kind, a few famous individuals play a very important role in significant events which became the turning point of certain period of history. While some may assert that the influence of individuals is overvalued and that it is the power of those unknown groups of people that made historic changes possible, I doubt that perception. I am convinced that some few are meant to preside over history; contributions in other fields of civilization are also principally made by individuals; besides, it is more practical thus understandable for the study of history to start with individuals.

In ancient times, admittedly cruel but true, some people were born with the superiority to decide the matter of life and death of others, even the future of their nations. In old empires like China, India or middle ages Europe under the influence of the Church, where social hierarchy or caste is distinct, the ruling power certainly dominate the history. In fact, when historian analysis certain policies or social changes of a dynasty, they naturally start with the policy maker—the ruler. Sometimes the whims and goals of a king or emperor totally changed the life of his people and political pattern of the whole world. The first emperor of Qin who unified China in 221 BC., Genghis Khan who conquered nearly half Asian and Europe, Elizabeth I who gave prosperity to England, George Washington who contributed to the unification of U.S.A today... these great rulers wrote the history. Even nowadays heads of each nation is continuing to make history. The special few people hold much more political, economical and diplomatic clout than ordinary mass or group of common people, thus having a greater impact on history than any others.

Individuals without noble origins also dictate the trend of history. In social revolutions or uproars, which were often regarded as the resistance of the people, the initial effort and most significant decisions were made by few leaders who rose from mediocrity. According to the theory of Semelser, social uproars are routed in massive animosity, but this fire of rage need to be enlightened by primers, which were usually the advocate of certain individual who became leader of the event, whether he or she is meant for good or bad. For example, the world war two was initiated by Nazis and primarily its crazy leader-- Hitler. Actually, by mobilizing and motivating the mass, Hitler rose from a common soldier and changed and reformed the world using his unusual charisma and insanity. In this case, the value of individual is fully demonstrated, in an calamitous way though. Many heroes from low status have managed to change history with their exceptional qualities. They are certainly the objects of history study.

In other fields of civilization, it is also individuals who are remembered in history. Shakespeare and his plays, Edison and the light bulb, Van Gogh and his sunflowers, altogether those great masters gave vitality to their respective fields and impel the development of human history in an all round way.

From a more practical perspective, as the speaker have mentioned, many people behind a great historic event are long forgotten, their origins and experience were faded in the ashes of history, how do historians yield any productive result learning about them? Like say, how is it possible to study all the belligerents in Normandy Invasion? That will be a waste of time and energy. While analyzing individual opinion leaders can best explain the action of groups, it is recommendable in history study.

In sum, although people is the fundamental forces of social change, some individuals rule history, some lead history, some complete history, they have more decisive impact on the groups of people and the trend of history. It is those individuals that are more studying worthy.

In the long history of human kind, a few famous individuals play a very important role in significant events which became the turning point of certain period of history. While some may assert that the influence of individuals is overvalued and that it is the power of those unknown groups of people that (have) made historic changes possible, I doubt that perception. I am convinced that some few are meant to preside over history; contributions in other fields of civilization are also principally made by individuals; besides, it is more practical thus (这个词用得让人很费解,应该是and吧) understandable for the study of history to start with individuals.

In ancient times, admittedly cruel but true,(这句话想追求简洁,但是让人不好懂,最好改为it is a cruel but indeed true fact that) some people were born with the superiority to decide the matter of life and death of others, even the future of their nations. The special few people hold much more political, economical and diplomatic clout than ordinary mass or group of common people, thus having a greater impact on history than any others.(这段论证很有力,例证清晰且简洁,结尾也注意了总结升华,赞~!)
