In modern society, clothing is not just simply function as the covering for human body, it also reflects a person's personality, state, and religion. For a group of people in a certain society, their clothing also work as the cover of the society's culture. By observing them, the culture behind the fabrics comes to the surface.

What people wear for daily life tells much about the feature of the time. Today, men may sometimes choose to wear men's skirts such as togas or kilts, especially on ceremonial occasions. Such garments, however, were worn as normal daily clothing by men in previous times. In modern industrialized nations, women are more likely to wear makeup, jewellery, and colorful clothing, while in very traditional cultures women are protected from men's gazes by modest dress. Now, take a glimpse at our streets, Ray-bans are coming back to fashion from the old day in 60s, mixing with today's tends of colorful leggings, creating something combine with old fashion and shape edge. What we can tell about that? The fashion of the clothing is the label of every period.

Some dresses are the symbol of a race or nation. In some countries people still wear ethnic or national dress on special occasions or in certain roles or occupations and people in certain religion wear dresses for their faith. Some Muslim women wear a veil when they go out to show their chastity or virginity. Jewish ritual also requires rending of one's upper garment as a sign of mourning. Jains wear unstitched cloth pieces when performing religious ceremonies. The unstitched cloth signifies unified and complete devotion to the task at hand, with no digression. Those clothing custom embody the idea of a nation and reflect their culture.

By the early years of the 21st century, western clothing styles had, to some extent, become international styles. The process of cultural dissemination has perpetuated over the centuries as Western media corporations have penetrated markets throughout the world, spreading Western culture and styles. It becomes hard to distinguish the difference of people in different society from the clothing in some formal occasions. While in people's daily life, the combination of global fashion trends and local style is normal. For example, most Korean men and women have adopted Western-style dress for daily wear, but will still wear traditional hanboks on special occasions, like weddings and cultural holidays. Items of Western dress may also appear worn or accessorized in distinctive, non-Western ways. A Tongan man may combine a used T-shirt with a Tongan wrapped skirt, or tupenu.

In conclusion, the clothing people wear may function as a form of adornment and an expression of personal taste or style. And also reflect a society's ideas and values.

The speaker generalizes unfairly that the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests and the society’s ideas and values as well. From my perspective, this statement is ex parte for the appearance and behavior of a society’s people can not be the sole consideration when judging the society’s value.

No doubt, today’s popular globalization makes it possible that nearly everything is to have no national boundary, even truth in culture. Globalization draws near our distances. Thanks to the creation of hair tint, everyone can wear a colored hair as he/she likes, which disenabled us to judge a person’s nationality by his/her hair color.(小疑問?我覺得nationality的問題的首要判斷依據是膚色而不是髮色吧...) Owing to the development of communication systems, we can be informed of the fresh fashion trends sweeping across the globe and dress the fashionable skirts of all kinds of styles, never seeking the traditional folk costume at the bottom of our wardrobes until some anniversaries of important traditional events(學習了), thus making it hard to see some ethical traditional dress on the streets. Due to the inventions of ball-point pens and gel-ink pens, the Chinese brush and the goose pen are all history and can hardly been seen in today’s work environment. As a result, the way people look, dress, and act tends to be same under the effect of globalization and such outward form alone can never be the only criterion to the judging of a society’s value.

Admittedly, the ideas and values of a society could be told by the appearance and behavior of its people to some extent. One interesting thing was once spread among the experienced American tourists: when they are on an air plane in Europe, they can easily determine which passengers are from Germany, Sweden, or the Switzerland by observing the passengers’ behavior. They conclude this as a rule that a passenger who looks at the watch when the plane takes off and check the time for the second time when the plane lands is certainly a man from those European coutries because their punctuality are well-known. However, in some Asian countries, people pay less attention to the time. As a result, different societies own their ideas and values on “time”, which can be apparently seen on the behavior of its people.

这段的例子很好的支撑了分论点:the ideas and values of a society could be told by the appearance and behavior of its people to some extent.如果在結尾的時候和論點結合,加一句總結性的話,這樣的論述會比較完整。

Nevertheless, even presenting a reflecting of society's ideas and values to some extent, one cannot rule out the existing of the individual difference. When growing up, people may form their own unique attitude and interest which is influenced by what they sees and hears. For instance, some international organizations are filled of members from all over the world because of the same interests. Although they may be not familiar with each other’s national languages, they may act the same styles towards a certain thing, which may not affected by their potential society’s ideas and values.

In sum, it is unfair to judge a society’s ideas and values only by its members’ appearance and behaviors. To make the conclusion more convincing, we should also take objective judging criteria into consideration, such as the literature works and art works left in the society which reflect the traditional history and value of it.

According to the statement, the speaker claims that one can learn much about a society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. It has some merits from a normative standpoint, however, in my opinion, I cannot totally agree with such extreme view because it is too unilateral and restricted to understand a society’s ideas and values only by such way.

To begin with, the speaker’s assertion that the appearance and behavior of people can reflect the society they belong in is quite compelling, in two respects. First, indisputably, the appearance and dressing of people are vital parts of the social culture. An impressive example of this is involving
that the women in Iran, with the social ideas of religious supremacy, have to veil all their bodies besides their faces and hands while those in western countries, with the social ideas of liberation, democracy and equality, can dress more professional, stylish and what ever they like. Secondly, the way people act can also reveal the social ideas and values. Considering that when people greet each other, the French like to hug friendly while the Koreans more willing to bow instead, since the former’s social values are more zealous and explicit but the latter's social values are more shy and implicit.

However, I disagree with the statement because it seems to ignore that the appearance and behavior of people would be restrained and influenced by some factors, which will mislead people from really realizing a society. For one thing, people with certain vocation or in certain situation might be forced to wear special uniforms, which would eliminate the social differences. For example, all doctors and nurses over the world are dressed the same kind of white uniforms, and all athletes in Olympic Games share similar sport suits.(加一点小总结会更完美) For another, under the trend of globalization and personality, the differences between societies have become smaller and smaller meanwhile the differences between individualities have become bigger and bigger, which make it difficult to distinguish from behavior and appearance, such as most Eastern nations celebrating the Christmas like Western counties doing, all youngsters around the world wearing T-shirt and jeans but holding specially personal styles--Hip-Pop, Punk, Neutrality and so on.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, if one would like to understand values and ideas of a society, they should pay more attention about other objective respects of the society, such as history, culture, religion and moral regulation and law, since the function of people’s exterior appearance and behavior are normally limited to a shallow level. For instance, we need to rely on historical records and other statistical evidence, which indicates the overall development of a society, to wholly understand the polygamy existed in some countries.(这个例子放在这里有点突兀,可能是因为句型的关系,我想吧polygamy这个往前放一点会比较好。而且同样的,缺一点小分析。) Consequently, a comprehensive analysis and studying about the background and overall developing progress of a country may help to draw a complete conclusion of the society.

In sum, I concede that people can come to understand the ideas and values of a society by way of observing its people’s appearance and behavior to some extent. Nonetheless, in a sense the speaker overlooks the limitation of such method and the importance of other aspects reflecting a society. In the final analysis, we may safely reach the conclusion that we should learn fully about a society’s values and ideas through several respects such as its culture, history, moral regulation and law and so forth, besides the way people look, dress and act.

语言非常的棒,越来越棒了!学习到不少。例子的选用也很好,就是需要注意一下,都用了那么好的例子了,在多一点这个例子是怎么支撑观点的论述就完美了~

The statement above just posed an opposite opinion to the old Chinese saying” Man cannot be judged by his appearance only”. While it proves correctly to have a general understanding to a person for the first time by judging his/her appearance, yet the authors should also take a deeper consideration about the complexity of the reason why people dress and behave which is not merely to show certain idea of a society.

As we all know, Dressing can reveal some traits of one’s personality and habits. A person with a neat dressing can be judged as an attentive person who do everything very carefully. A person who never cares for his/her appearance may do not take much care for the insight of other people and lead a free attitude toward life without being constrained by the mainstream of the mundane world. Also, the different styles of clothing can tell others what a kind of person the dresser is. People with conservative dressing may be the same conservative in personality while the outstanding looks of some people show their interest in involving to different things.

Turn to the society level. Does it the same that by judging the appearance of most people in a society, it can be inferred the society’s idea or value? However, while observing the appearances and behaviours is a rather direct way to distinguish people, yet it is not a valid way to extract a society’s value.

Firstly, the globalization in the fashion world which does not allow us to make a distinction from the clothes people wear. A beautiful Gucci coat may be the same popular to both people live in United States and China. Can we assert that it is no disparity with Western and Eastern society’s value only by finding that people of these two country wear equally a same coat. The answer is obviously negative. Thus by simply observing what people wear is insufficient to understand a society’s idea of a region.

Secondly, the way people dressing in the society sometimes functions as a manifesto to their different social roles which is not going to show any personal value. To identify a social position, a businessman will always wear formal dress whether he/she is fond of leisure suits. We could not get a hasty conclusion that all the businessman shares a same value by their same clothing. It is a necessary thing to do rather than to show a certain value of themselves.
Lastly, people dress and behave most according to that their circumstances The Eskimos like to wear thick clothes which are neither variable nor colourful for the reason of the extreme cold weather. Meanwhile, people in Africa tends to wear colourful clothed which is just a imitation to the colourful tropic plants around them. Both of the appearances of the people in these two regions have little relationship with the society’s value. Also, Women in Arab country is likely to wear masks does not embody any society’s value but just for the requirement of religion.

In sum, with all the analysis above, A conclusion can be drawn here that judging appearance do take some certain effects on understanding of a person. Whereas to a more higher level of society, a collective value cannot simply implicated from the appearance and behaviour of people. A society’s idea should be evaluate with more knowledge on economics and culture but not only by the surface of things.

Sometimes people dress for adapting to their environment which is as a primitive requests for living but not a society’s value.

TO 小谦:

//I would like to argue with you that the differences in different societies embody the society's value. The Eskimos like to wear thick clothes means that they value practical and do not care about out-looking of things. Meanwhile, people in Africa tends to wear colourful clothes because they value the imitation function of the clothes. While in your paragraph, you explained that they are the requirement of the religion, however, in my point of view, these customs reveal the value of a society.

THX for ur revision!
Well, I think you posed a very good question there though I still hold my view of point in this part. If imitation and adaptation to the circumstances is regarded as the value of society. I think it’s shared by all the humankind which does not make distinction of different people of region. Back to the primitive society, the origin of humankind is to adapt to the circumstance and the imitate things surrounded them. Though customs were gradually formed in this procedure and different certain values of different regions develope., yet to some extent most of these things like adapting to the environment are just fundamental requests and primitive thinking of survival with no established value. I think it’s a problem of sequence. But religion is really a thing which should take more consider about it ,thx to ur suggestion, and I modified my expression to avoid misleading my meaning about that.

1st revision for ITY

Revision of mistakes
Good expression to learn
Comments from the reviewer

Can we know about a person by observing his appearance and behaviour? In my point of wive<
view>, in some cases, the way people look, dress, and act do indicate<indicates> his/her attitudes and interests,
but in other cases, they do not.
<this sentence here is a complete repeat of the former clause, u can diversify expression like” it not always happen like this” instead of repetition> Moreover, we can never know about a society <the reviewer thinks “know about a society” is too general which may induce some explanation irrelevant to the topic, the reviewer suggests to focus it on “ society’s value” which is more strike the target.>just by observing its people.

"We can

tell a person from
what he/she wear." said by a famous fashion expert. However, this word is relative but not absolute right. In the United State, African American are keen on wearing hip-hop style clothes. In Japan, white-collar employee prefer wearing in Western dresses and leather shoes. In China, national minority would like wearing their particular costume. From the examples
I enumerate above, we can see their interests, culture and habits. While in some other cases, people's appearance will confuse us. Is it possible for us to tell everyone's attitudes and interests when we are crowed by students in uniforms? Is there any possibility to tell every worker's attitudes and interests when we walk into a factory?

Sometimes, people's interests are revealed by their behaviour including the way they live, the way they talk, the way they act, and so on. For instance, a person characterized by bookworm is definitely one that value knowledge. And, a person who is always talking about Porsche, Ferrari is clearly a big car fan. Furthermore, a person who dances everywhere even in public is absolutely one whose life is full of music and dance. However, in other respects people's behaviour cannot suggest what they want to do but what they have to do. When a girl often attends a singing class, can we conclude that she is a music lover? It is probable that she is forced by her mother, or she wants to get a better job and earn more money in future?

<The reviewer thinks a top sentence is needed in the beginning to clarify the main viewpoint in the paragraph >

Finally, the statement unfairly generalized that through the appearance and behaviour of a society's people we can know about its ideas and values. For example, when some foreigners first came to China and happened to see a group of people who were in luxuries, is it fair for them to assert that Chinese is already rich enough? Or if they happened to see a group of people who were in traditional costume, is it fair for them to conclude that China still seclude the country from the outside world?
<the reviewer thinks these two examples should be more focus on the keyword “society’s value” instead of just interpreting the economic condition of China> As far as I know, society's ideas and values are formed by lots of aspects such as, history, social system, economic development and so on.<good point! The reviewer thinks this is a good point which can be extent to make further explanations> Therefore, Instead of only observing the society's people, we need to live in the society for a while, after which we can know the society better.

To sum up, whether we can judge a person from his/her appearance or not, we cannot know about a society from its people's appearance and behaviour.
<The reviewer thinks this conclusion still need to be expanded>

2nd Revision for 小谦

Revision of mistakes
Good expression to learn
Comments from the reviewer

When I started looking around the people in my sight, the hair style, the cloths, and act seemed to revealed people’s attitudes and interests to some extent. When it comes to the social level, by comparing the differences of people’s social customs and traditional dressing among different countries, societies’ ideas and values were unveiled. However, with the process of globalization, people’s dressing and attitude have a trend to integrate.

First of all, the appearance, dress and gestures reflect people’s attitude and interests, but in some cases this method is limited. The outside looking including facial expression, hair style, clothes, and shoes indicate the preferences of the owner. People’s characters also can
be detected from their appearance, like that talking with rich facial expressions suggest one’s out-going characteristics and smiling faces represent friendly. In addition, a person’s serious attitude can be judged by his/her clothes and gestures. There are numerous of examples shows that we could characterize an individual by his/her out-looking and body-gestures(good points!). However, judging by this indicated method is limited to some extent. In a group of people who wear the same kind of clothes or even uniforms and are doing the same things, it is difficult to identify people’s interests and attitudes by their out looking and gestures. Anyway, we could still characterize them as a group. For example, in a libratory, all the students are reading books wearing ordinary casual wear. It is difficult to identify each student with different characters, but the conclusion that these group of students work hard in their studies and so on could be drew.(The reviewer thinks this example needs to be exchanged to more proper ones. Because students working in library cannot to explain anything about somebody’s value but just to prove that they need to do things which have to do in library. So the reviewer thinks this is just an opposite case to say that we cannot judge only by their behaviors) be Take another example, in the troop, soldiers wearing uniforms have few chance to show their unique as individuals, however, they are the same as a group and they show characters as soldiers like strong bodies, special skills and the like.

Also, people in a country share some values and attitudes reflected by people’s cloths and action. We could deduce this by traditional cloths and
social intercourses of different societies. The totally differences of dresses between east and west are studying by sociologists, which could reveal people's differences in reorganization of the world. Social etiquette reflect(s) people’s attitude towards life. For example, advocating the spirit of Bushido, the Japanese have a lot of bow his head. Respecting the elders and loving the young is one of the traditional Chinese virtues which could be detected from people’s gestures. And USA, which presents diversity in people’s dressing and gestures declare(s) that it is tolerant of different cultures and traditions.

However, with the process of globalization, the dressing styles of people have a trend to integrate and people become acceptable of the attitudes and values from other societies. For example, fashion designers pay close attention to Paris where is the world's fashion capital. People also dress typical clothes from other countries, revealing that our sense of beauty and values trends to merge. Golden values and humanized attitudes spread throughout the world. For instance, the feminism converts the convention that boys were superior to girls in China. No discriminations towards the blacks is an international accepted tradition. Nowadays attitudes are promoted across the country
.<So what’s the topic here? It seems that the conclusion is all people around the world share a same value, but not to prove the relationship between the appearance or behavior and the society’s value.>
In conclusion, the looking and gestures of an individual, a group, and a society reveals certain characters, like preference, values, and attitudes. A man of penetration could acquire as much information as possible. In order to learn from someone or a society, you can start from observation.

If you go for an interview, your dress and your behavior play a key role in whether you will be accepted. Your casual appearance, such as so-so T-shirts, shorts, or even beach sandals, will disappoint the interviewers by imaging your slipshod attitude toward your work, thus may turn down your application, while if you go into the room in a suit and heels and if you are easy in conversation and graceful in manner, it does reflect your sense of responsibility, and showing that you are more competent. What you want your dress be and how you behave say a lot about you. In spite of it, if we judge a person only from dress and behavior, we always find that we are on the wrong course.

There are one thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Various experiences and surroundings shape various personalities and interests, which mirror in people choice towards their dress and their reaction towards a specific thing. For example, in the road, there never lack of group of people that make up heavily, with several shining headwear, fashionable hairdos, low-cut dresses and miniskirts that just cover the hips. Some never think about what can be do in public and what do not. No doubt, they are the ones that never miss the cutting edge, and we may image their boldness and exaggeration. Instead, some guys prefer concise fashions. For them, they always avoid standing out among others. Seldom speaking out their voice in the meetings, being gentle when contacting with others, putting on a simple T-shirts at the last minute before leaving home are their common living style. Thus by their daily performance, we get to know that they are easy of access and try to keep everything in harmony.

However, this rule is not always effective, just as there are some people that are not what they appear. No one can figure out the murderers in school shooting before they commit crime. They just wear similar dress, communicate with others as usual, while in fact, their mention have distorted for a long time, thus breeding devil and causing the tragedy. Moreover, even though in our daily life, we prefer to conceal what we think sometimes, to protect ourselves, to avoid annoying others, or just, to prevent the situation from turning to the opposite side that is hard to deal with.

Judging one from his/her dress and act is not convincing, for this judgment focuses on specific person, which is difficult for us to make a precise evaluation. But for the society, the story is totally different. After all, only a small amount in society are murderers, and most of the people will show their real and honest. Thus it makes it possible for us to have an understanding about the society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of most of its people. Compare the difference of dress between American and Chinese. The US people are very open for they always prefer vests and shorts; while the Chinese are more veiled for most of them only wear cottas even the temperature is very high. We will express our opinion with more metaphors for we hope that we can keep everything in harmony, while the Americans will speak out their voice once they find it reasonable. These tiny and trivial reactions say a lot about what the society believes in.

In short, dress and act should not be the only mirror that figures out one’s attitudes and interests correctly, and we should not form our impression towards a person based on it. Understanding a person is a long process, and we’d better communicate with the person more often to have a correct judgment. But for the society, which has a large number of people, it’s effective to know more about the society’s ideas and values by people’s appearance and behavior.

When I started looking around the people in my sight, the hair style, the cloths, and act seemed have revealed people’s attitudes and interests to some extent. Comparing the differences of people’s social customs and traditional dressing between different countries, societies’ ideas and values were unveiled. However, with the process of globalization, people’s dressing and attitude have a trend to integrate.

The appearance, dress and gestures reflect people’s attitude and interests. The outside looking including facial expression, hair style, clothes, and shoes indicate the preferences of the owner. The clothes of the owner fashionable or out of style shows his/her favor of clothes. Does he or she have a preference to one specific color? People’s characters also can be detected from their appearance, like rich facial expressions with talking suggest one’s out-going characteristics and smiling faces represent friendly. In addition, a person’s attitude serious or not can be judged by his/her clothes and gestures. There are numerous of examples shows that we could characterize an individual by his/her out-looking and body-gestures.

However, judging from this indicated method is limited to some extent. In a group of people who wear almost the same clothes or even uniforms and are doing the same thing, it is difficult to identify people’s interests and attitudes by their out looking and gestures. Anyway, we could still characterize them as a group. For example, in a libratory, all the students are reading books down wearing ordinary casual wear. It is difficult to identify each student with different characters, but the conclusion that these group of students work hard in their studies and so on could be drew. In another example, in the troop, soldiers wearing uniforms have few chance to show their unique as individuals, however, they are the same and as a group they show characters as soldiers like strong bodies, special skills and the like.

Also, people in a country share some values and attitudes reflected by people’s cloths and action. We could deduce this by traditional cloths and social intercourses of different societies. The totally differences of dresses between east and west are studying by sociologists, which could reveal peoples differences in reorganization of the world. Social etiquette reveals people’s attitude towards life. For example, the Japanese are advocating the spirit of Bushido, the Japanese have a lot of bow his head. Respecting the elders and loving the young is one of the traditional Chinese virtues which could be detected from people’s gestures. And in USA, which composed of various of citizens from different culture also present a diversity in people’s dressing and gestures.

In conclusion, the looking and gestures of an individual, a group, and a society reveals certain characters, like preference, values, and attitudes. A man of penetration could acquire as much information as possible. In order to learn from someone or a society, you can start from observation.

People’s characters also can be detected from their appearance, like that talking with rich facial expressions suggest one’s out-going characteristics and smiling faces represent friendly. Also, people in a country share some values and attitudes reflected by people’s cloths and action. We could deduce this by traditional cloths and social intercourses of different societies. The totally differences of dresses between east and west are studying by sociologists, which could reveal people's differences in reorganization of the world. Social etiquette reflect people’s attitude towards life. For example, advocating the spirit of Bushido, the Japanese have a lot of bow his head. Respecting the elders and loving the young is one of the traditional Chinese virtues which could be detected from people’s gestures. And USA, which presents diversity in people’s dressing and gestures declare that it is tolerant of different cultures and traditions.

Nowadays attitudes are promoted across the country.

In conclusion, the looking and gestures of an individual, a group, and a society reveals certain characters, like preference, values, and attitudes. A man of penetration could acquire as much information as possible. In order to learn from someone or a society, you can start from observation.

To polo: bow [size=110%]vt.
低头,点头(以示尊敬、祈祷、羞愧等),点(头)致意;欠(身);屈(膝);使鞠躬,使欠身:
例句: The king bowed his head to the crowd.
国王点头向群众致意。
He bowed his head in shame and sadness.
他羞愧和悲伤得低下了头。

advocating the spirit of Bushido, the Japanese have a lot of bow his head. 按理解应该是a lot of Japanese bow his head.

哈哈~~~polo我可能自己造了那两句蓝色的句子~~~~

建议very helpful, expecially the one about structure.

The statement above just posed an opposite opinion to the old Chinese saying” Man cannot be judged by his appearance only”.[I would like to remind you that while the old saying uses 'only', it means that the saying concede appearance does contribute to judgement.] While it proves correctly to have a general understanding to a person for the first time by judging his/her appearance, yet the authors should also take a deeper consideration about the complexity of the reason why people dress and behave which is not merely to show certain idea of a society.

As we all know, Dressing[dressing?] can reveals some traits of one’s personality and habits. A person with a neat dressing can be judged as an attentive person who does everything very carefully.

//While you mainly discuss the appearance of people in this essay, I would like to suggest you pay attention to the word "act" in this issue. You seem forgot to discuss "act".

Firstly, the globalization in the fashion world which does not allow us to make a distinction from the clothes people wear. A beautiful Gucci coat may be the same popular to both people live in United States and China. Can we assert that it is no disparity with Western and Eastern society’s value only by finding that people of these two country[countries] wear equally a same coat.[?] The answer is obviously negative.

Lastly, people dress and behave most according to that their circumstances. The Eskimos like to wear thick clothes which are neither variable nor colourful for the reason of the extreme cold weather. Meanwhile, people in Africa tends to wear colourful clothed[clothes] which is just a imitation to the colourful tropic plants around them. Both of the appearances of the people in these two regions have little relationship with the society’s value. Also, Women in Arab country is likely to wear masks does not embody any society’s value but just for the requirement of religion.

In sum, with all the analysis above, A conclusion can be drawn here that judging appearance [again, what about action mentioned in the issue]do take some certain effects on understanding of a person. Whereas to a more higher[delete more] level of society, a collective value cannot simply implicated from the appearance and behaviour of people. A society’s idea should be evaluate with more knowledge on economics and culture but not only by the surface of things.

All the comments are my undersdandings, my point is to advise you to add some more ideas to make your essay more convincing.

===============改polo二改==============
As the statement indicates, people' attitudes and interests can be reflected by their appearances and behaviors, which also reveal their society's ideas and values. In my view, the habits and customs of a people cannot the accurate indicators of their attitudes and values.

Admittedly, in a certain extent, the way people look, dress and act can reveal their attitudes and their society's values. The contemporary American[s] are characterized by a panoply of rituals, behaviors and manners of dress among its members, which indicates that the society place a high value on individual freedom and cultural diversity. The bright star, Lady Gaga, who leaves a deep impression on the masses by her weird and exaggerated dressing up, can be the most typical model for it. She has become the most popular singer in America and has millions of fans, which can embody American values on pursuing individuality. Another example is British, of which the sense of gentlemanly conduct has been a symbol. Through[用by是不是更好一点] the observation of British's behavior, it is convenient to reveal the ideas of being virtuous feelings and actions.
// Gaga的例子很精彩
Even so, however, I should say that】【口语化,建议删除】 people's outward appearance and behaviors are not the exclusive or the most accurate indicators of their attitudes and values. As to a specific person, we cannot judge him or her, merely from his or her appearance, which could belie their true attitudes and values. To recognize a person indeed, we should communicate with him or her and inquire upon his or her experiences. Only in this way can we get a comprehensive image of the one. For instance, Stephen William Hawking, who is admired as one of the most prominent theoretical physicists after Einstein Albert, is nearly entirely paralyzed and unable to speak, but he also【建议删除】 published his book[better 'a book named'] "A brief History of Time" in 1988 and took a big step in the respect of Einstein's theory of relativity and Planck's quantum theory. Just assume such a kind of person ,who is unable to walk and speak as normal man, standing in front of you, you can by no means imagine that he have[has or had] made many astonishing achievements just[前半句用了just,改个only比较好] judging from his disabled appearance and without reading his books or listening to his lectures【这句比较突兀】.

Moreover, in terms of a society, we cannot yet understand its soul only from their people's appearance and behavior. The best access to know about a society is to learn its culture, history, arts and so forth. As we know, China has a long history of 5000 years; its ideas and values grow up[means become an adult, impropriete here] day after day. You cannot get an accurate definition[不太妥当,understanding? would be better] of Chinese national spirits , unless you give a broad overview of the history and culture. You could not have a taste of beauty of implicative expressions, if you [would have ][直觉觉得用had更好]never read Chinese poetry. You could not appreciate such unique and elegant artistic conception reflecting people’s spirits, if you 【would have】直觉觉得用had更好 never seen the Chinese landscape paintings.

In sum, people's appearance and behaviors are merely the tip of an iceberg in revealing their attitudes and their society's values. If you want to know about a person or a society indeed, you need to care for several other aspects just like the above mentioned factors.

//看了好几遍,能给你的建议就这么多。
像这些表达“people's appearance and behaviors are merely the tip of an iceberg in revealing their attitudes and their society's values.”就是细想想会很怪,但也不知如何让你改
结尾可以稍稍写复杂一点,不然木啥意义了

好不容易赶出来的...简直不堪入目....:dizzy: 麻烦改文的队员了....

Thanks to the creation of hair tint, everyone can wear a colored hair as he/she likes, which disenabled us to judge a person’s nationality by his/her hair color. Owing to the development of communication systems, we can be informed of the fresh fashion trends sweeping across the globe and dress the fashionable skirts of all kinds of styles, never seeking the traditional folk costume at the bottom of our wardrobes until some anniversaries of important traditional events, thus making it hard to see some ethical traditional dress on the streets.

改polo---------------------------------------------------

As the statement indicates, people' attidudes and interests can be reflected by their appearance and behavior, which also reveal their society's ideas and values. In my view, the habits and customs of a people【people】polo的这句话是从那本范文精讲中借鉴过来的吧~嘻嘻 感觉书上就有错误 cannot the accurate indicators of their attitudes and values.

Admittedly, in a certain extent, the way people look, dress and act can reveal their attitudes and their society's values. The contemoporary【这是什么词啊?】 American are characterized by a panoply of rituals, behaviors and manners dress【这里也不是非常理解,前面是一套礼仪,后面又马上加了dress】 among its members, which indicates that the society place【places】 a high value on individual freedom and cultural diversity.【学习一下~】The bright star, Lady Gaga, who is one of the most popular singer stars in American and leaves a deep impression on the masses by her weird and exaggerated dressing up, can be the most typical model for it. Another example is British, of which the sense of gentlemanly conduct【这里又是什么意思呢?】 has been a symbol. Through the observation of British's behavior, it is convenient to reveal the ideas of being virtuous feelings and actions.
【在一定程度上,人文的行为等能揭示他们的态度和社会价值】我觉得这部分的论述lady gaga的例子只是简单的说了一下,论述的部分很少。两个例子最好能结合人的态度和社会价值明确的进行阐述。

Even so, however, I should say that people's outward appearance and behaviors are not the exclusive or the most accurate indicators of their attitudes and their society's values.【学习!】As to a specific person ,we cannot judge him or her ,merely from his or her appearance, which could belie【继续学习~】 their true attitudes and values. To recognize a person indeed,we should communicate with him or her and inquire upon his or her experiences.Only in this way can we get a comprehensive image of the one. For instance,  Stephen William Hawking, who is admired as one of the most prominent theoretical physicists after Einstein Albert, is nearly entirely paralyzed and unable to speak, but he also published  his book " A brief History of Time"  in 1988 and took a big step in the respect of Einstein's theory of relativity and Planck's quantum theory.

Moreover, in terms of a society, we cannot yet understand its soul only from their people's appearance and behavior. The best access to know about a society is to learn its culture, history, arts and so forth. As we know, China has a long history of 5000 years; its ideas and values grow up day after day. You cannot get a【an】 accurate defination of Chinese national spirit , unless you give a broad overview of the history .
【社会的价值不能但从人的角度理解】polo的想法很好,要从历史文化等角度理解,但是阐述上面过于简单了~详细充实点吧~

In sum, people's appearance and behaviors are merely the tip of an iceberg in  revealing their attitudes and their society's values. If you want to know about a person or a society indeed, you need to care for several other aspects just like the above mentioned factors.

总结:
polo是限时写的吗?厉害~不过篇幅感觉太短了,里面有许多论证貌似不是很充分,需要补充哦~
其实我对这篇文章也不知道如何把握~我的意见仅供参考啦~

改小C:

In modern society, clothing is not just simply function【function是动词,这里直接functions就行,前面就不用加is啦~】 as the covering for human body, it also reflects a person's personality, state, and religion. For a group of people in a certain society, their clothing also works as the cover of the society's culture. By observing them, the culture behind the fabrics comes to the surface.【学习~】

Now, take a glimpse at our streets, Ray-bans are coming back to fashion from the old day in 60s,【感觉小C对服饰方面的东西好了啊~哈哈 题外话 例子好生动~】 mixing with today's tends of colorful leggings, creating something combine【combined】 with old fashion and shape edge. What we can【can we】 tell about that? The fashion of the clothing is the label of every period.

【服饰可以反映时代的特色】

Some dresses are the symbol of a race or nation. In some countries people still wear ethnic or national dress on special occasions, in certain roles, occupations. And people in certain religion wear dresses for their faith. Some Muslim women wear a veil when they go out to show their chastity or virginity. Jewish ritual also requires rending of one's upper garment as a sign of mourning. Those clothing custom embody the idea of a nation and reflect their culture.
【部分服饰是民族的象征】穆斯林和犹太人的例子很棒~

A Tongan man【这让我想到世博园区里面非洲联合馆的汤加~那里的章真不好看,就是几个普通的英文字母~题外话 哈哈】 may combine a used T-shirt with a Tongan wrapped skirt, or tupenu.
【有些服饰已经引领了潮流】

In conclusion, the clothing people wear may function as a form of adornment and an expression of personal taste or style. And also reflect a society's ideas and values. Every individual in a certain society, can be involved in its culture. And the most exact way to express it is dressing them on.

这篇文章我感觉好难写啊。。。写的自己感觉非常糟糕,明天我再好好改吧。

208.."The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behaviour of its people."

Can we know about a person by observing his appearance and behaviour? In my point of wive, in some cases, the way people look, dress, and act do indicate his/her attitudes and interests, but in other cases, they do not. Moreover, we can never know about a society just by observing its people.

"We can tell a person from what he/she wear." said by a famous fashion expert. However, this word is relative but not absolute right. In the United State, African American are keen on wearing hip-hop style clothes. In Japan, white-collar employee prefer wearing in Western dresses and leather shoes. In China, national minority would like wearing their particular costume. From the examples I enumerate above, we can see their interests, culture and habits.

Finally, the statement unfairly generalized that through the appearance and behaviour of a society's people we can know about its ideas and values. For example, when some foreigners first came to China and happened to see a group of people who were in luxuries, is it fair for them to assert that Chinese is already rich enough? Or if they happened to see a group of people who were in traditional costume, is it fair for them to conclude that China still seclude the country from the outside world? As far as I know, society's ideas and values are formed by lots of aspects such as, history, social system, economic development and so on. Therefore, Instead of only observing the society's people, we need to live in the society for a while, after which we can know the society better.

To sum up, whether we can judge a person from his/her appearance or not, we cannot know about a society from its people's appearance and behaviour.

第一次自改——感谢Frances的评论,很受用!!

Can we know a person's attitudes and interests by observing his appearance and behaviour? In my point of view, in some cases, the way people look, dress, and act do indicate his/her attitudes and interests,
but in other cases, they are not representative even counterproductive.
Moreover, we are not allowed to judge a society's ideas and values just by observing its people.

Is there any possibility to tell every worker's attitudes and interests when we walk into a factory? Thus, people's appearance may be not representative to reveal people's attitudes and interests.

I turn next to the way people act. Sometimes, people's attitudes and interests are revealed by their behaviour including the way they live, the way they talk, the way they act, and so on. For instance, a person characterized by bookworm is definitely one that value knowledge. And, a person who is always talking about Porsche, Ferrari is clearly a big car fan. For example, when some foreigners first came to China and happened to see a group of people who were in luxuries, is it fair for them to assert that one of the Chinese people's values is having a extravagant life? Or if they happened to see a group of people who were in traditional costume, is it fair for them to conclude that one of the Chines diplomatic ideas is to seclud the country from the outside world?
As far as we all know, society's ideas and values are formed by lots of aspects such as, history, social system, economic development and so on.
For instance, to understand Chinese dietary habits, it is necessary for us to experience almost all kinds of food there, and learn the Chinese history, in which way, we can totally comprehend Chinese people's values on food and why they use chopsticks but not forks.
Therefore,to know a society's values and ideas better,
we need to study the history and the development of it instead of only observing the society's people,

Overall, appearance and behaviour of people, who are free to wear or act themselves, can reveal their real attitudes and interests. Yet confined people's clothes and habits belie their true attitudes and interests. Furthermore, whether we can judge a person from his/her appearance or not, we cannot judge a society's ideas and values from its people's appearance and behaviour.

第一改——梦想在路上(小V)

According to the statement, the speaker claims that one can learn much about a society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. It has some merits from a normative standpoint, however, in my opinion, I cannot totally agree with such extreme view because it is too unilateral and restricted to understand a society’s ideas and values only by such way.

To begin with, the speaker’s assertion that the appearance and behavior of people can reflect the society they belong in is quite compelling, for(in) two respects. First, indisputable(indisputably), the appearance and dressing of people are vital parts of the social culture. A telling example of this is involving(不太理解这里为何使用这个时态?) that the women in Iran, with the social ideas of religious supremacy, have to veil all their bodies besides their faces and hands while those in western countries, with the social ideas of liberation, democracy and equality, can dress more professional, stylish and what ever they like. Secondly, the way people act can also reveal the social ideas and values. Considering that when people greet each other, the French like to hug friendly while the Koreans more willing to bow instead, since the former’s social values are more opening and zealous
.(and the latter's social values...)

Beyond this concession, however, I disagree with the statement because it seems to ignore that the appearance and behavior of people would be restrained and influenced by some factors, which will mislead people from really realizing a society. For one thing, people with certain vocation or in certain situation might be forced to wear special uniforms, which would eliminate the social differences. For example, all doctors and nurses over the world are dressed the same kind of white uniforms, and all athletes in Olympic Games share similar sport suits. For another, under the trend of globalization and personality, the differences between societies have become smaller and smaller meanwhile the differences between people have become bigger and bigger(这一句话写的很好,但是我觉得可以把people, societies位置调一下,因为从下文可以看出,你想强调的是社会的区别越来越小。所以我觉得你可以写成一个转折,突出社会区别越来越小那一部分), which make it difficult to distinguish from behavior and appearance, such as Christmases being famous in Eastern countries(这句话我觉得应该改写一下,写成东方国家的人们也开始庆祝圣诞节,这样才能突出人们的behaviour与后面人们的apperance相呼应), all youngsters around the world wearing T-shirt and jeans and holding personal style.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, if one would like to understand values and ideas of a society, they should pay more attention about other objective respects of the society, such as history, culture, religion and moral regulation and law, since the function of people’s exterior appearance and behavior are normally limited to a shallow level. For instance, we need to rely on historical records and other statistical evidence, which indicates the overall development of a society, to wholly understand the polygamy existed in some countries. Consequently, a comprehensive analysis and studying about the background and overall developing progress of a country, which may help to draw a complete conclusion of the society.(这句话没有谓语动词)

很漂亮的一篇文章。。。看了之后,我就不敢看自己文章了。。

第二改——Frances

The statement above just posed(很好的一个词,但是我觉得用一般现在时就可以了吧) an opposite opinion to the old Chinese(我记得高中老师说过一个形容词的顺序问题,不知道是不是硬性的规定,总之我觉得chinese old saying要好一些吧) saying” Man cannot be judged by his appearance only”. While it proves correctly to have a general understanding to a person for the first time by judging his/her appearance, yet the authors(author) should also take a deeper consideration about the complexity of the reason why people dress and behave which is not merely to show certain idea of a society.

As we all know, Dressing can reveal some traits of one’s personality and habits. A person with a neat dressing can be judged as an attentive person who does everything very carefully.

Does it the same that by judging the appearance or behaviour of most people in a society,(我认为这里需要一个连词) it can be inferred the society’s idea or value? However(后面是对前面疑问句的解答,我不认为是转折关系), while observing the appearances and behaviours is a rather direct way to distinguish people, yet it is not a valid way to extract a society’s value.

Firstly, the globalization in the fashion world which does not allow us to make a distinction from the clothes people wear. A beautiful Gucci coat may be the same popular to both people live in United States and China. Can we assert that it is no disparity with Western and Eastern society’s value only by finding(finding out) that people of these two country wear equally a same coat(注意the same coats和a same coat的区别). The answer is obviously negative. Thus by simply observing what people wear is insufficient to understand a society’s idea(我认为这里写成values好些,因为毕竟values和ideas是不一样的概念。这里你再考虑一下) of a region.

Secondly, the way people dressing(dress) in the society sometimes functions as a manifesto to their different social roles which is not going to show any personal value(values). To identify a social position, a businessman will always wear formal dress whether he/she is fond of leisure suits. (这里最好加个转折transition word)We could not get a hasty conclusion that all the businessman shares a same value by their same clothing. It is a necessary thing to do rather than to show a certain value of themselves.(这句话,我不太理解,尤其是句首的it指代的是?求真相)

Lastly, people dress and behave most according to that their circumstances The Eskimos like to wear thick clothes while African people wears little . It is just for the two entirely difference of weather .Meanwhile, people in Africa tends to wear colourful clothes which is just a imitation to the colourful tropic plants while the Eskimos wear rather simple and authentic which is the same to those iceberg around them. Sometimes people dress for adapting to their environment which is as a primitive requests for living but not a society’s value.

//这篇文章语言很好,也很地道。但是,我认为,作者在论述上,缺乏了society's idea的论述。确实,文章不应该面面俱到,要有侧重点,但是完全忽略那一部分也是不太妥当的。这篇文章中,作者用了很大篇幅去论证,apperance与society's values 上,但是在一些段落的论证中,比如提到爱斯基摩人与非洲人的那一段,论据很好,但是分论点的建立,我个人认为应该基于人们能不能从中看出社会的values,而不是建立在这些人的apperance 能不能反应社会values上。这就好像是,一个长方体,你从另外一面去看它,它是长方体,确实没有变,但是你看上去变瘦或者变胖了。 不知道有没有表达清楚。欢迎反驳我!!!

TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS: 430          TIME: 00:37:13          DATE: 2010/5/31 22:52:20

As the statement indicates, people' attidudes and interests can be reflected by their appearance and behavior, which also reveal their society's ideas and values. In my view, the habits and customs of a people cannot the accurate indicators of their attitudes and values.
Admittedly, in a certain extent, the way people look, dress and act can reveal their attitudes and their society's values. The contemoporary American are characterized by a panoply of rituals, behaviors and manners dress among its members, which indicates that the society place a high value on individual freedom and cultural diversity. The bright star, Lady Gaga, who is one of the most popular singer stars in American and leaves a deep impression on the masses by her weird and exaggerated dressing up, can be the most typical model for it.Another example is British, of which the sense of gentlemanly conduct has been a symbol. Through the observation of British's behavior, it is convenient to reveal the ideas of being virtuous feelings and actions.
Even so, however, I should say that people's outward appearance and behaviors are not the exclusive or the most accurate indicators of their attitudes and their society's values. As to a specific person ,we cannot judge him or her ,merely from his or her appearance, which could belie their true attitudes and values.
You cannot get a accurate defination of Chinese national spirit , unless you give a broad overview of the history .
In sum, people's appearance and behaviors are merely the tip of an iceberg in  revealing their attitudes and their society's values. yiIf you want to know about a person or a society indeed, you need to care for several other aspects just like the above mentioned factors.

--------------一自改 thanks so much for the helpful advice pionted by agnes-------------

As the statement indicates, people' attitudes and interests can be reflected by their appearance and behavior, which also reveal their society's ideas and values. In my view, the habits and customs of a people cannot the accurate indicators of their attitudes and values.

The bright star, Lady Gaga, who leaves a deep impression on the masses by her weird and exaggerated dressing up, can be the most typical model for it. She has become the most popular singer in America and has millions of fans, which can embody American values on pursuing individuality. Just assume such a kind of person ,who is unable to walk and speak as normal man, standing in front of you, you can by no means imagine that he have made many astonishing achievements just judging from his disabled appearance and without reading his books or listening to his lectures.

Moreover, in terms of a society, we cannot yet understand its soul only from their people's appearance and behavior. The best access to know about a society is to learn its culture, history, arts and so forth. As we know, China has a long history of 5000 years; its ideas and values grow up day after day. You cannot get a accurate definition of Chinese national spirit , unless you give a broad overview of the history. You could not have a taste of beauty of implicative expressions, if you would have never read Chinese poetry. You could not appreciate such unique and elegant artistic conception reflecting people’s spirits, if you would have never seen the Chinese landscape paintings.

In sum, people's appearance and behaviors are merely the tip of an iceberg in revealing their attitudes and their society's values. If you want to know about a person or a society indeed, you need to care for several other aspects just like the above mentioned factors.
