ARGUMENT174 - The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.
"We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But eighty percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumni who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all-female, therefore, will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially."

In this argument , the author comes to conclusion that Grove College should preserve its century - old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. To justify the claim, the author points out that eighty percent of the students responding to a survey wanted the school to remain all female and over half of the alumni also oppose coeducation. The author also argue that keeping the college all-female will improve morale and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially. However close scrutiny of this argument reveals that it is unconvincing in several aspects as follows.
First and foremost, the survey must be showed to be reliable before I can accept any conclusion the author reached based on it, By pointing out the eighty percent of the students responding to the survey, the author fails to provide information regarding the absolute number of the responders. Additional, whether the sample is representative enough to reflect the overall attitude of the college deserves to doubt.Without evidence of the survey's reliability , it is impossible to draw any firm conclusion based on the survey about the real willness from the students whether it should be coeducation in Grove College.
In addition, another survey showed in the argument that over half of the alumni also oppose coeducation is too vague , that the author fails to prove that the responses are accurate or that the respondents are statistically significant in number. At the same time , there exists serious flaw the arguer make,if the Grove College is college century - old tradition of all-female, there should be all alumnae rather than alumni. It make the argument logically unacceptable, and I even doubt about its credibility.
Finally, the author argue that coeducation will ruin the morale of the campus while the all-female will improve it , however, the author give no evidence to prove this relationship. Perhaps it will be more harmonious for the female students to communicate with the male ones, which to some extend ,will give rise to higher level of the morale in the campus. The author also unfairly claims that in order to convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially we should continue all-female style, even if the they oppose the coeducation , no explanation is given to make it logically that they will stop financial support to the college.
To sum up, the conclusion reached in this argument is invalid and misleading. To make it logically acceptable the arguer would have to substantiate the detail of the survey about the number of the respondents,Moreover , I would suspend my judgment about the credibility of this argument until the author can provide more information about why the coeducation cannot improve the morale in campus and refered to the evidence that alumnae will stop their financial support if the college tune into coeducation. |
