我有疑问...

GRE填空题中有一道，正确答案给的是：

Within the next decade, sophisticated telescopes now orbiting the Earth will determine whether the continents really are moving, forestalling the incipient rift among geologists about the validity of the theory of continental drift.

这个答案，rift当然是对的，但是forestalling我怎么看怎么觉得有问题。

看Webster的解释：

Forestall
1 : to prevent the normal trading in by buying or diverting goods or by persuading persons to raise prices
2 archaic : INTERCEPT
3 obsolete : OBSTRUCT, BESET
4 : to exclude, hinder, or prevent by prior occupation or measures
5 : to get ahead of : ANTICIPATE
synonyms see PREVENT

陈圣元填空给的解释是“阻止掉”，但是可以看到Webster里面没有这个意思。Webster的意思是“预先阻止，预防”。但是很明显，“预先阻止”放在句子里是不合逻辑的，因为事件出现的顺序颠倒了。先有争论，再有事实消除争论。事实不可能预先阻止争论。

谁来给个解释啊？？？

我也不是很懂。
填空是不是主要考察一种概念上的关系。意思上可能有细微的差别。

只要大概意思对就可以吧。

这个是不是只要把“阻止”的意思想出来就可以了。

我觉得这里forestalling the incipient rift among geologists about the validity of the theory of continental drift没有问题啊
forestalling 预先阻止初期的争论
forstalling后面的incipient就可以说明该词的合理性。
