14. "Instead of requiring students to take couses in a variety of disciplines-that is,……Such concentration is necessary in today's increasingly work-oriented society"
I fundamentally agree with the speaker's latter contention that in today's increasingly work- oriented society, students should pay more attention to the courses that will help prepare them for jobs. However, I strongly disagree with his/her former contention that instead of requiring students to take courses in variety of disciplines, colleges and universities should allow students to enroll only in those courses that will help them to prepare for works in their chosen fields.
In today's increasingly competitive and work-oriented society, we need to feed ourselves more and more depended on the specialty knowledge we have, and dose not like in the feudal time, some people can live better rely on the estate heir from his/her progenitors. If we have no specialty knowledge nowadays, we may lose our jobs, and even then lose our lives. After all, survival and life is the most important thing for almost every person.
I disagree with the speaker's first contention for four reasons.
First, what courses are helpful for the jobs students choose? There is not a definite answer that could ensure everyone. In fact, there are courses which have to do with the jobs student choose more or less, but there have no courses which we can say that it has no connect with the jobs. For instance, the knowledge of machinery manufacture is more relational with the cars manufacture, but we should also know esthetic that could make the cars more beautiful, and then could make it sell better. Architects design buildings which not only could stand well, but also should make them look very good.
The courses can improve each other, but not isolate from each other. Leonardo da Vinci was famous for his success in drawing. We should not ignore that his endeavor in anatomy really help him to draw a person more vivid. Mondale who had been conducted by a math’s professor contributed the development of heredity, also was helped by the knowledge of math analysis. And nowadays, many cross-courses boom flourish, so that we can indicate it is connect that between different courses.
Secondly, some aspects which are very helpful for the jobs students choose can not be learned in class. For example, the risks in business, the indefinite in economy and the work experience may not be taught in colleges and universities.
Thirdly, the jobs students have chosen in their college time may change in the future. Many people may alter their works several times in their lives, regardless for whatever reasons, such as Welch who first studied chemistry then took charge of the GE, and Greenspan who majored in music and wanted to become a rock musician in youth but became indulge in economy then instate the chairman of American. It is possible that students change their career one day, so that they need to know more knowledge about variable courses.
Fourthly, even though job is very important for us, students should know that job is not everything and only thing in their lives. They will have everyday knowledge such as how to use electrical apparatus and treat the person who injure in accident. We are not the only one person who live in the world, we need to communicate with others. If we only know the things about our jobs, it may be difficult and boring to talk with others. And then, having some hobbits will have to do well with our jobs and ourselves, such as Steven Zhu who was awarded the Noble Prize are interested and mastered in music that make his live more enjoyable.
To sum up, I concede that the work and studying knowledge for work are important, but at same time we should understand that other courses which seem no relation with the jobs students choose will still do better for them.
