144,It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value.
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Currently, the value of the critic is under great suspicion, some people argue that the critic gives nothing of enduring significance to the society. However, in my point of view, I agree that it is the artist who gives society something of lasting value whereas the critic also plays a crucial pole in the field of art.
To begin with, the artist does bring something of significance to the world, which will not be undermined even by the severest criticism. As it is said by a famous Chinese writer(and I paraphrase):Being a piece of gold, it will glitter eventually. When it comes to the area of art, it is the same. If it is really an excellent work, it will be appreciated by the public ultimately. Take the abstract painting by Van Gogh for example, when he was alive, his work was considered of no value at all by the critic and even by the public. However, not long after his death, with the promotion of the mass cognition, people began to realize the inherent significance of his work. Therefore, the outstanding art work will at last proves to be valuable though it is possibly not be accepted by the contemporaries.
(例子用的恰当,语言简洁,赞!)
On the other hand, there is no denying that it is the critic who help the public to have a better understanding of the significance to the artwork. Common sense tells us that many famous works are not easy to understand/comprehend,(这用comprehend好) such as the Last Super and the Mona Lisa by Da Vinci, how many people on earth understand the essence of the leading(gorgous) art works? In this case, the critics have a space to exert themselves. For instance, A Dream Of Red Mansions, a most famous work in China at present(at present去掉), enjoys an everlasting reputation throughout the country. However, it is not easy to imagine that when it was born, the government regarded it as an obscene book and forbade it, which also led the public to have a bad(用clear好吗?bad太绝对了吧?)impression of the book. With the great effort of the critic from generation to generation, such as having research to the author's background, experience and the social culture at that time, finally, they found that this book do was an outstanding artwork and increasingly number of people started to accepted (accept and appreciate)the book. Thus, it is apparently that the critics, who are willing to devote themselves to some(some去掉) artwork, will offer an access to the outstanding work, which is not easy for the mass(ordinary people) to understand.
Furthermore, what the critics point out, to some extent, give inspiration for the creation of the artists and simultaneously, help them to assimilate the advantages of other’s works and also offset the weakness of themselves. Nowadays, in the realm of film, the producers are mostly aim at the box office without having a deep thought about what they should bring to the audience. However, Titanic, the best film in the 1997 Oscar, drew a vast attention of the critics and therefore gave the film industry a intense impact. The critics, after a further study of the film, revealed to the public what is contained in the film, that was: the everlasting love and the very spirit of the human being that should be cherished most when facing the death, which also offered a good lesson to the entirety of the film producers about what was the most important in their work.
To sum up, the critic is also useful in the society, other than the artist.
