Argument 38
The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.
'An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism.'
Before pouring large amount of Ichthaid into schools and work places, the evidence given in the argument should be examined from several other angles. The author seems to assume that eating fish or taking Ichthaid can lower absenteeism based on a study reports in East Meria without examining other factors that can affected the conclusion.
Firstly, the information given in the study is quiet vague. The author assumes that people in East Meria do not quiet catch cold, however as cold is not a serious disease, people may not go to the hospital for treatment, instead, most people may deal with it at home. Further, even if people in East Meria do not quite catch a cold, it does not necessarily mean that it is because they eat a large amount of fish. People in East Meria may go to the gym a lot, or like sports, so that the health condition there may be very good. It is also possible that people there eat certain food other than fish, and it is that food which prevent colds. In addition, even if eating fish can help East Meria people prevent colds, it may not work for people in West Meria. Perhaps people in West Meria will not be able to be protected by eating fish because they have certain genetic differences to people in East Meria.
Secondly, even if eating fish can help West Meria people prevent colds, do Ichthaid have the same function? It is said that Ichthaid is derived from fish oil, not fish. Is fish oil equal to fish? Do they work in the same way? Is there any substance that contained in fish which do not exist in fish oil, and is this substance the one that prevent colds? Moreover, even if fish oil is equal to fish, do Ichthaid contain the substance that prevent colds? will the substance missing or destroyed when deriving? We just do not know.
Finally, even if Ichthiad can prevent colds, can it lower absenteeism? We all know that catching a cold is the most commonly used alibi to avoid going to work, so if this is actually why people absent from work, Ichthaid may not have much use in lowering absenteeism.
In conclusion, the argument can be more convincing if more evidence can be provided. It can be further improved by taking into account other factors that may affected people catching colds or absenteeism.
