10"Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive, because it is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated."
Syllabus:
1 cultural tradition can be preserved and generated in cities
2 in developing country it is not necessarily the case
3 literature preserved culture
4 art preserve culture(Egypt painting)
According to the speaker, a nation’s cultural traditions are preserved and generated primarily in cities. I concede that some cities preserved and generated the cultural tradition of the nation, but for some newly developed cities, it is not necessarily the case. And, as culture tradition is a broad concept that involved many aspects, people still have other way to understand and preserve it, by investing in the study of literature, and art for example.
Pairs, Berlin, Rome, London, and Vein, when people traveling in Europe, the capitals seldom fail to take their breath away, for they all have a long history, and are all extremely beautiful, but at the same time, different from each other, representing the distinguish custom and culture of the countries. The major cities, which usually the political and economical centers of the countries, where a lot of significant events had take place, witness the growing, thriving, and even falling of the countries. They shared the smiles as well as tasted tears of their people and gradually changing shape by the people who were and are living in. Affecting by different cultural traditions, people have different ways to express themselves, which are all recorded in the streets, the buildings, the plazas, the stores, and the atmosphere of the cities. One needs to look no further than New York to see this. With thousands of skyscrapers, millions of automobiles and billions of people rushing for their dreams, New York reflects the cultural tradition of American people-diligence, aggressiveness, and never stops endeavoring for their goals.
However, for some developing countries, their newly constructed major cities may be incapable of preserving and generating the cultural tradition. People may feel lost in some major cities of China. With brand-new buildings, bridges, green grass and pruned trees, they look the same but not a little Chinese. Some of them may even preserve less cultural traditions than China-towns. That is the condition for most of the newly constructed cities in developing countries. They rose up from wilderness quickly with the economic booming of the countries, and stand for modern days rather than the past and the cultural traditions.
And, for culture is a system of beliefs, values, and assumptions about life that guide customs, languages, behavior, and material artifacts, it is natural that cultural tradition is preserved and generated in various forms. Literature, as the reflection of people’s life, is one of the abundant forms. A famous French writer once said,”Novel is a mirror walking on a main street.” Based on the life of contemporaries of the writers, novels reflect the thoughts, beliefs of the people, record how people live and behave, and further put their contemplations towards the society, which are some of the basic elements of culture of a time. And when people reading the novels, they can acknowledge the cultural tradition preserved in the novels. So, by investment in the writing and studying of literature works, cultural tradition can also be revealed and preserved.
Similarly, art, which is the record and concentration of daily life and thoughts, also preserve and carry down cultural traditions. There are usually two aspects of art: the superficial content it describes and the deep meaning it mirrors, both of which are crucial parts of cultural traditions of a nation. For example, the painting of ancient Egyptians portraying their rituals and ceremonies help people get the knowledge of the rituals as well as recognize the austere theory of life and death of the Egyptians. Thus, study in art is another way of preserving the cultural traditions.
In conclusion, cultural traditions rooted in many areas, so the government should strive in many ways to preserve them, including supporting major cities and investigating in the studies of literature and art. |
