Though unprecedentedly  prosperous  is the society in respect of material due to the ever-developing science and technology ,yet there are human needs the mainstream science can not address.I concede that some nanmainstream areas of inquiry such as astrology ,fortune-telling ,and psychic and paranormal are able  to satisfying these needs ,as to  which  the mainsteam science are powerless.Nevertheless,i am still inclined to endorse  the opinion that the potential harm they inflict on participants are well outweigh the benefit they bring about in psychological aspect.:lol
Admittedly , such nonmainstream areas of inqury address a limited amount of human needs.On one hand,it is favored by a few people in that it can comforts those who worry about their destiny .when confronting with some  critical but thorny problems or bogged down in a quandary ,these participants would make their final choices and decisions according to the so-called astrology or a stack of tarot cards ---to prevent bad forturne or possible false alternatives.
On the other hand,the nonmainstream are:$as of inquiry play an important part in meeting the curiosity of some people to the extraterrestrial world .Many people attempt to seek for their "past life" and afterlife  ,such attemption may be based on the interest --eager to search for the life extended beyond the grave,or the desire --hoping to connect with the "other side"  through psychic and paranormal pursuits.this desire is of  particular intensified after people are separated from their lovers and parents,or close friends.Under these circumstance ,these nonmainsteam areas of inquiry may satifying  some's curiosity or relieve the pains bought by the perpetual separation.;P:)
Although such nonmainstream areas of inquiry is probably vital insofar as they can provide some psychological  solace to those who are fascinated with them,still.its harmful influence  imposed to the people is even more apparent.these so-called science - rooted on numerous ad hoc  hypothese  rather than empirical investigation and research-may prevent people from actively struggling against fate,or make every effort for a brighter and promising future.For example,Provided that  someone ,born with gift in business , give up his career due to the  negative prediction from some fortune-tells ,and spend his lifetime farming in countrysides,poor in his whole life,if so ,we can conclude that these pseudoscience should be the main cause of his tragic fate.
Further,when supernatural stories are twisted with realistical phenomena,people will be confused ,failing to discriminate between them .these victims may become vulnerable to self-deception,fulfilled with false hopes,fantastic ideas ,even stubbornly adhere to delusions.From the angle of individual,such people ,lost in mental turmoil,are more likely to be  intolerant to the society than others,worse still,this emotion may deteriorite into  abomination ,which is apt to provoke some irrational and anti-social behavior s.To the society,it may lead to some artocities,such as genocide,or mass persecution.:)
Simply put ,with the concession that such nonmainsteam areas of inquiry may give some mental comfort to those who is in pedicaments ,i still tend to agree with that it harmful effect is far outweigh the positive side.Therefore,people should just  treat it as a way of relieve suffering and stress  ,rather than a power controlling their destiny
