The speaker asserts that reading books is not as important as it once was, because people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. I disagree with this opinion. As far as I am concerned, it is hard to say which one people can learn more from because each have it own characteristics. TV can help people obtain accurate information and real-time event in impressing and vivid way, yet reading books will never lose its status as the most traditional learning method as it was before. They supplemented rather than substituted each other.
On the one hand, TV holds the inherent advantages over books mainly in two aspects. First, TV can document every detail of events and scenes, thus can impart accurate information of events and scenes in impressing and vivid ways. Because its inborn nature that depends on combination of sound, moving imagery, and text caption字幕 to convey information and knowledge, TV can provide more 真实的real and convincing record and is more attractive and easily understandable for people to accept the events or scenes than reading book. Yet books, which are mainly based on words or text to convey information, will not completely descript the details of events and scenes. For examples, TV can recount in complete and objective detail events such as a football match, a vivid speech, a president election or a significant political events and so on. No matter how keen an observer or writer cannot write down every detail in books about the whole process of these kinds of things. Watching TV is pleasurable sensory experience for many people to enjoy beautiful natural scenes and historical sites with悦耳的melody sound, yet this experience can never be recovered by reading books.
Second, watching TV can help people get to know the latest events happening all corner of world every day. Depending on the advanced satellite technology and arduous辛苦的 work of journalisms, TV can cover real-time information and latest newsletter时事动态 that most of people are concerned. Yet books always lag behind TV in such aspects as reporting the real-time information, those being happening and so on because it is long-term process for books from conceiving构思, writing to publishing. Without TV, people cannot immediately watch the tremendous damages and hurts in wealth and hearts, which hurricane brings about, to American people at the time it was happening in American. Without TV, people cannot know how about one of their favorite sportsmen behave in happening in a 激烈的 football match now. And without TV, people cannot learn what are the latest developments and the people’s reactions at once in London subway 爆炸案.
On the other hand, reading books is also inherently superior to books on other two aspects. First, reading books is active learning process compared with watching TV. People can freely choose the time and content what they are favorable for to learn knowledge and information by reading books. When coming across key points that they are interested in, people can review and cross-reference the materials in the books. People can also underscore, make the marks or write footnote to the important or interesting information they thought in the books. On the contrary, watching TV is passive learning process. In selecting TV programs and content, managers of TV often filter information in order to appeal to the widest viewing audience. People cannot decide on what kinds of programs are shown in the TV and what time they are displayed. Many knowledge and information the audience want to learn cannot broadcast in TV. Even to their favorable program, people cannot control the speed and frequency of program. It is impossible for people to freely return to an attracting scene or insightful discussion about important social and political issues that has broadcast in TV.
Second, reading book can enable people learn theoretical knowledge. One cannot image how to learn a complicated scientific theory by watching TV, for the reason that learning complicated theory is based on the rigorous reasoning and analysis, and needs the deep thinking. TV’s instant and passive nature can render them ineffectual to learn these kinds of information and knowledge. Yet browsing books allows people for deeply thinking the scientific theory while searching for relative information with theory to learn the backgrounds, cause-effect and so on.
To sum up, TV helps people learn the real-time information in vivid and impressing way, and books help people learn theoretical knowledge in active ways. They are never replaced each other and both is important for people to learn. |
