Argument233The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of a company that builds

shopping malls throughout the country.

"The surface of a section of Route 101, paved two years ago by McAdam Road Builders, is now badly

cracked and marred by dangerous potholes. In another part of the state, a section of Route 66, paved by

Appian Roadways more than four years ago, is still in good condition. Appian Roadways has recently

purchased state-of-the-art paving machinery, and it has hired a new quality-control manager. Because of

its superior work and commitment to quality, we should contract with Appian Roadways rather than

McAdam Road Builders to construct the access roads for all our new shopping malls."

This argument, which may seem cogent at first glance, is seriously flawed in the following aspects. On one hand, the vice president arbitrarily concludes that Appian Roadways generally offers better quality of service than McAdam Road Builders. On the other hand, the evidence for the conclusion is unsound and insufficient. Details are presented in the lines below.

To begin with, the evidence cited by the author that the condition of a section of Route 101, paved two years ago by McAdam Road Builders is basically worse than that of a section of Route 66 which is paved by Appian Roadways more than 4 years ago does not necessarily leads to the judgment that Appian Roadways offers better quality of engineering service. It is possible that the average traffic per
day is much heavier on the section of Route 101, paved by McAdam Road Builders, and therefore it would turn out very naturally that the surface of the road contains many potholes. It could also be the case that the climate of the region where the section of Route 101 locates is very bad, say temperature is always 0 degree, then it would not be the responsibility of the McAdam Road Builders for the miserable condition of the road, but the people who maintain Rout 101 and the freezing weather as well.

In addition, even the comparison between the conditions of the two sections of the road basically reflects the quality of paving works done by the two companies; it would be naive to justify the superiority of the Appian Roadways over the McAdam Road Builders. It could be the case that the effectiveness of the McAdam Road Builders is much more advanced than two years ago, or Appian Roadways has degraded it's working quality in the four years. Therefore, the author needs to supply evidence than concerns more paving works of both companies at present or at least not long ago.

In the final analysis, the author cites the proof that the Appian Roadways purchased state-of-art paving machinery as well as hired a new quality-control manager to demonstrate the company's superority over McAdam Road Builders, which is unpersuasive. For one thing , we have very good reason to doubt the condition of the state-of-art paving machinery, which could be abandoned by the seller since it is too old or ineffective to be used for the paving work. For another, the background of the newly hired quality-control manager is not provided, what is more, whether the he or she can bring effectiveness to McAdam Road Builders is still open to question.

In short, to improve this argument, the author needs to provide solid evidence demonstrating that the Appian Roadways is generally better than McAdams Road Builders.
