"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."（36）
一个人是否伟大是由后人评定的而非他同时代的人。
时间先后
1 许多伟人是被他们同时代的人认可的
2 很遗憾一些伟人是后来才被人认可的
3 伟人之所以伟大在于他对社会的影响和贡献，认可与否只是时间问题。
When it comes to the issue" Who can decide the greatness of individuals?" As far as I am concerned, the question cannot be solved by simply answering "Who". Either the descendants or the contemporaries are not important. The greatness of individuals can be determined by its influence on our society.

First of all, the greatness of many people is acknowledged by their contemporaries. From scientific areas to daily life, from arts to literature, a large number of giants were set as examples for other citizens. For instance, Mother Teresa's work has been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a series of awards and distinctions. Martin Luther King’s civil rights movement got immediate response from people. Mark Twain was considered to be the best-loved author in his time. The reason why they received accolades and can be accepted by their society is various. It is the daily life devotion and dedication, which is easy to notice and comprehend, that makes Mother Teresa be approbated. Martin Luther King's greatness lies in his insightful idea, which agreed with the social trend at that time. The famous American writer, Mark twain with his vivid and humorous pen has impressed lots of reader, which greatly established his reputation in the United States. But all these reasons can come down to their great contribution and influence to our society.

It is a pity that some great individuals are accepted after a long time. Their greatness and talent has been covered up. It is a great loss of our society. For example, although Vincent van Gogh is a world-famous artist today, he did not get much recognition during his lifetime. Van Gogh only sold one painting while he was alive and for most his life he was very poor. What's more, neither Darwin's the theory of evolution, nor Gregor Mendel's the theory of heredity is recognized immediately after they present their theory. The Darwinism even resulted in a trial that rocked the world. Limitation of their contemporaries' knowledge and view is one reason for their being ignored. What they are concentrated on is far beyond common people's comprehension. But they are still great since they make advancement for the whole society.

Finally, the greatest influence and contribution they have made can never be buried, which is only a matter of time. The grandness will not become dimmer just for they are not understood. One needs look no further than Shakespeare, the most brilliant and talented writer in the world. When his works was first published, some praised while others did not. Even somebody was suspicious of the identity of the author’s work. But one can still see Shakespeare’s play in the theatre, can also notice his book being passed around. To some extend, his characters and themes affect the ideas and feelings of one generation after another worldwide. As a result, it is not necessary to pick whether his contemporaries or descendants have the final say.

In conclusion, the individual’s influence of our society is essential in determining whether one is great or not. The cognitive system, the development of science, the social environment cannot weaken the brilliance of the greatness.

As a result, it is not necessary to pick whether his contemporaries or descendants have the final say. 另外，这段话主要是讲“是金子总要发光的”，个人觉得用physical science 的例子比用art and literature 的例子要好。因为theories are enunciated in papers published while literature are assessed by the critics. 例如Mendel 的heredity and gene theory 在他死后还有人作系统的科学研究，只不过是相关学科的发展不健全使得他的paper不著名，因为later scientist have to read and analyse the previous papers of the field. 实验证明了就可以实现‘让金子发光’。而critics 可以说好也可以说不好，完全凭他们的价值观和理解，所以art and literature 的“金子很多年后发光”比较少见。 Einstein的Theory of Unification也是这样，虽然现在证明不了，可是他的paper还在，一旦有一天证明了，great rewards 就应该给他。当然这是个人意见，考试时影响应该可以忽略不计
总的来说挺好的，应该没问题了我觉得。。。
