ISSUE 36 社会类
"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."(36)
一个人是否伟大是由后人评定的而非他同时代的人。
时间先后
一、有些伟人在他的时代就已经被人们所认可了.
二、有些伟人是在后代才被认可的.
三、造成这样先后时间问题的原因是各种各样的;
结论:实际上,伟人迟早会被认可,存在的只是时间问题
When it comes to the issue" Who can decide the greatness of individuals?" As far as I am concerned, the question cannot be solved by simply answering "Who". In history, some great men are recognized by their contemporaries, whereas some are acknowledged by their later generations. As a matter of fact, the greatness of individuals can be determined by its influence on our society, no matter earlier or later.
First of all, the greatness of many people has been acknowledged by their contemporaries. From scientific areas to daily life, from arts to politics, a large number of giants were set as glorious examples for other citizens. For instance, Mother Teresa's work has been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a series of awards and distinctions. Martin Luther King’s civil rights movement got immediate enthusiastic response from people. Mark Twain was considered to be the best-loved author in his time. They were acknowledged either by awarding Nobel Prize-the High Profile awards, or by their great popularity among people at that time.
It is a pity that some great individuals are accepted after a long time. Their greatness and talent has been covered up. It is a great loss of our society. For example, although Vincent van Gogh is a world-famous artist today, he did not get much recognition during his lifetime. Van Gogh only sold one painting while he was alive and for most his life he was very poor. What's more, neither Darwin's the theory of evolution, nor Gregor Mendel's the theory of heredity is recognized immediately by their contemporaries. The Darwinism even resulted in a trial that rocked the world.
The reason resulting in the acknowledgement early or late in time is various. It is the daily life devotion and dedication, which is easy to notice and comprehend, that makes Mother Teresa be approbated. Martin Luther King's greatness lies in his insightful idea, which agreed with the social trend at that time. The famous American writer, Mark twain with his vivid and humorous pen has impressed lots of reader, which greatly established his reputation in the United States. But all these reasons can come down to their great contribution and influence to our society. On the other hand, as for the reason why people were recognized by his posterities. Limitation of their contemporaries' knowledge and view is one reason for their being ignored. Also, what they are concentrated on is far beyond common people's comprehension. But they are still great since they make advancement for the whole society.
In conclusion, the issue is a complicated one that requires us to look through the superficial to reveal the true reasons underneath. The individual’s influence of our society is essential in determining whether one is great or not. The cognitive system, the development of science, the social environment cannot dim the brilliance of the greatness. The influence and contribution those great men have made can never be buried, which is only a matter of time. |
