You are required to compose three essays. The Admissions Committee considers your responses to the following questions important in the selection process. Please respond fully and concisely to each question. Candidates who applied to Fuqua between September 2004 and April 2005 are considered reapplicants. Reapplicants are asked to complete the three Reapplicant Essays in place of the Applicant Essays. All applicants have the opportunity to submit an optional fourth essay to explain any extenuating circumstances of which the admissions committee should be aware.

! D. o7 C7 e" @( Y; M) {
We read the essays to get to know you as a person and to learn about the ideas and interests that motivate you. Because we want to discover who you actually are, resist the urge to "package" yourself in order to come across in a way you think Stanford wants. Such attempts simply blur our understanding of who you are and what you can accomplish.

9 j9 D- ?0 ^+ e. f, T2 f" SIn other parts of the application, we learn about your academic and professional accomplishments (i.e., what you have done). It is through your personal essays that we learn more about the person behind the achievements (i.e., who you are). This is the time to think carefully about what matters most to you: your values, your passions, your hopes and dreams.
& Z0 w: E8 z" B5 K4 j' S" z0 A, m/ K# r! n1 o% |/ Z  @9 N
We want to hear your genuine voice throughout the two essays that you write. Truly, the most impressive essays are those that do not begin with the goal of impressing us. Begin work on these essays early, and feel free to ask your friends and family members to provide constructive feedback. When you ask for feedback, ask if the essay’s tone sounds like your voice. It should. Your family and friends know you better than anyone else. If they do not believe that your essays capture who you are, how you live, what you believe, and what you aspire to do, then surely the Committee on Admissions will be unable to recognize what is most distinctive about you.  @5 B; q* P; e* C8 @: z
" G8 [7 A/ s7 w- ]8 @
However, there is a big difference between "feedback" and "coaching." There are few hard and fast rules, but you cross a line when a piece of the application ceases to be exclusively yours in either thought or word (excluding the letter of reference, which should be exclusively the recommender’s in thought and word). + B- N8 B7 u) }: j6 k" `% j# p
' h  n5 ^% P2 J
Appropriate feedback occurs when you show someone your completed application, perhaps one or two times, and are apprised of errors or omissions. In contrast, inappropriate coaching occurs when either your essays or your entire self-presentation is colored by someone else. You best serve your own interests when your personal thoughts, individual voice, and unique style remain intact at the end of your editing process./ W& Y4 j$ G; h( E6 t$ |2 t

% L, h! y- q0 U$ O! V: I

  -Why are you seeking an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business? What do you hope to experience and contribute? What are your plans and goals after you receive your degree (750 words maximum).
$ ], m0 _9 H. d) z# x* {( A
) k. b; P( E, j# ~+ l, E -Briefly assess your career progress to date. Elaborate on your future career plans and your motivation for pursuing a graduate degree from Kellogg (One to two double spaced pages).9 X2 x- h$ k% ?! |/ ?
; H& f6 [4 Q2 J4 m& D
% A, y. F4 j9 m
  -Please discuss the factors influencing the career decisions you have made that, in turn, have led you to your current position. Why is now an appropriate time to pursue an MBA, and what will you contribute to the class entering in the fall of 2000? What are your career goals for the future, and how will you avail yourself of the resources at the Wharton School to achieve these goals?

* l! [4 `% M6 o' O+ n  m3 x$ i! v& i! G+ }
2 p% d7 Z  o. c, Z+ J
* j0 A/ s. w' [' b1 m: W  最好在你过去经验的基础上对未来的目标加以人格化和多方面的陈述,而不是单纯说你的“希望”。这样,你的目标是从过去发掘并积累而成的,它们有“现实”作为生长土壤,不空洞,也不生硬。
$ f8 K/ F0 c+ ^
0 r) _2 s& ?9 ?; a1 o/ U 所以不要说“My goal is to become a consultant to high-tech firms starting business in Asia”,最好的说法是“Based on my experiences working in India and Hong Kong as a programmer and business analyst, and on my project leader work at Cenco Corporation in Singapore, my long term goal is to return to this area and start a consultancy advising large technology companies how to 'do business' as an employer in these countries.”。
- S% O: U  c( a+ H: L" C, }! {0 @6 G$ a
7 c# H+ {3 W; Y8 Y3 s' d. N- A/ o# \' [5 F: l9 y* Q' G7 Y( D- _' E
  3. 使用“Interests”和“Could Take The Form”的句型来写长期目标。
& V2 f: @7 Y1 e! G
( U& }4 S+ d. X& S! \* a Based on my leadership and cross-functional team experiences as the SDK Laser X-Ray project leader at Medco in California , and as a marketing specialist at Jetco in Shanghai, my long-term career objective is to use my technical and marketing know-how and leadership skills to help China obtain high-tech medical equipment. This goal could take the form of my starting a company in China to import or distribute such equipment, or my heading the division of a large American high-tech medical device firm such as X-med, Y-med, or Z-med with production for the Asian market as its goal./ E2 _+ T$ f1 u2 M+ @

4 `$ S7 A) S) }1 u My short-term goal after my MBA is to move from R&D to general management in a health care technology company such as X or Y. My five-year plan is to gain experience in various aspects of the health care technology business including business development, marketing, operations and strategy and also to establish my credibility in running a medium-sized organization.
2 l* N' h0 [/ `. B' Z1 g) P7 Y- v% u0 o  L) K2 H
% R* X4 L! p1 X- P: j- F, q. {9 {# t( {; T- ]4 Q% a; g
  Based on my experiences as the SDK Laser Widget team leader at Medco in California , and as a marketing specialist at Jetco in Shanghai, my long term career objective is to use my technical and marketing know-how and leadership skills to help China obtain high-tech medical equipment. 2 _( H3 B. ?. \  S) b3 q
9 G9 M' h, L: A
  I am greatly impressed by such companies as IndusMed and BengalRx which have specialized in bringing hi-tech medical devices to the Indian marketplace and I hope to replicate some of their success on the Chinese Mainland. Also, Sammy Lee, the Chinese Minister of Hi-Tech, is a personal hero of mine for his efforts to make technology bridges with Western suppliers. Mr. Lee's own company, Go-Go East, which is the leader in supplying Chinese and Hong Kong casinos with the latest in Western hi-tech gambling technology, is a good sign that China may soon be open to medical devices as well.
. I. O& ~6 R  _8 z
* R8 F1 r5 ~! U( `" _8 Z3 e$ v' |  有一点不要忘记,提到这些公司和人名的时候,只须有限地提及一两句,举出实际的名称当然证明你知道你在谈论的重点,但文章的重点是你自己。- [  C* q) P( @# p: U& J( p

% a' z3 U3 V0 a  5. 不要写行业或工作报告,只要写你的目标。
) g+ ^3 D! g8 X3 T9 {' n5 ^9 q& A* W( @
& C& `* T0 u2 g0 W- [" j
3 X: q4 [5 `$ `4 M. R

A: We just completed the largest business-school fund-raiser ever. In six years, we raised more than $425 million. The campaign was the effort of an incredible team, but one that had to be directed. I took charge of it three years ago when I became dean. My challenge was to create an environment where everybody felt included. * m/ Y1 [3 }6 P8 W* M# I. XI've learned that lesson multiple times during my career, and it's about listening to what I call "the voice of David." It's actually a tradition in Benedictine monasteries. When a decision has to be made, the abbot asks each monk's opinion, starting with the youngest. The order is intentional. In the Bible, nobody listens to David. There were plenty of gizmos with which to fight Goliath, and David was dismissed as a punk kid with a slingshot. In the end, the kid was right. When I've made a good decision, it's usually because I've listened to the voice of David. And when I've made a poor decision, I haven't taken the time to listen.

You have to make a conscious effort to go out and talk with people, and then listen and actively engage them. I spend more than half of my time outside the office. When I came on board, I needed to focus on our academic curriculum. My first move was to open up the process. Previously, there was only one associate dean position, and the job dealt with two segments: teaching and research. I decided to create two separate associate positions to focus specifically on each segment. To fill them, I chose two professors whom the rest of the faculty could go to regularly. Then I went to the new dean in charge of teaching and asked that person to put together a task force on the curriculum. It included faculty from all departments and one student.1 c3 [3 _! O6 y. P

. W, }3 p9 `2 U6 uOver my lifetime and in my four years as dean, I've become more aware of and impressed by how much of leadership is about emotional intelligence. The more you lead, the more you understand just how much of it is about motivation -- and motivation is about emotions. Most universities operate in the world of the intellect: The person with the best idea is the brightest. But to lead, being smart isn't sufficient. You have to connect with people, so that they want to help you move the organization forward./ t+ \" j' n; T# ~( A2 i

4 D  z6 t5 [6 |I came to Harvard in August 1967 and had a total disaster of a year. I was on financial aid, and I spent my first month cleaning dorms. It was not fun, nor was the rest of the year. The diagnosis was twofold: I probably was taking the wrong classes -- chemistry, for one -- and I didn't have my life together. I also learned that failure is about what you do with it. ( t9 n8 h6 U. {# r3 {' `
Today, I apply that insight to my work. How you deal with failure determines part of your success as a leader -- not only in your own life, but in the lives of people around you. As dean, I work hard to find ways to help our faculty, staff, and students be successful. Sometimes it doesn't work. People get into jobs that don't quite suit them. But people who work hard and who don't succeed deserve our best effort to help them find a place where they can be successful.

ESSAY TUTORIAL: A few rules to keep in mind* M# q3 O0 c. s

# l. ]1 [5 e4 a3 t9 M; G' o& k! F1 M# I
(1) Use Headings $ z# H) M8 c1 \  b& n5 w* }

6 F! X  u2 m1 v# @2 a& R$ s; cBecause every essay question is really three or four questions combined, it's a good idea to use headings to add structure to your writing and help you stay focused on the questions being asked. Headings also make it easier for the reader to follow your story. / d5 L- h; m9 q" |4 X, b

# G+ T* t) A0 j9 f- i. FThe most common (and most important) essay you'll write is the one that asks about career goals. It's usually combined with a question asking why you need an MBA and another asking why you need an MBA from that particular school. The basic strategy is to write something like the following three headings before attempting to respond to the questions:
& g; R* J" g7 ~. `% @7 g/ K
4 s# q9 t8 M6 YCareer Goals / c2 P( y- n  q, Z

Why This School?
: I' F/ X! f& k9 @4 ^! M% r2 D  e: r" b% e! X
Under each heading you should write a rough outline of your response. Don't worry about style, just get some ideas on paper. Then try to link your responses together into a single coherent essay. (And notice that with the headings, you don't need a transition from one topic to the next.)7 I0 f* q7 p/ l. i0 H. T
  N- U1 K! k* I% m1 I& p7 u
(2) Answer the Question Being Asked!) c# L9 J; Z5 Y( M! ?
0 `5 _. Z7 X( S7 s
Believe it or not, most applicants fail to answer the question being asked. A question might ask about professional accomplishments, and the applicant will respond with an essay about a spelling bee he won in the third grade! I see it all the time (and so do admissions officers).
8 S1 o- F' y9 l( Y3 V
& b0 Q" y+ {6 w' ?5 L* {That's why the headings are so important. I use them to restrict writers to the topic at hand. By limiting the writer to a direct response to a direct question I have a better chance of keeping him on topic. Without that structure most writers stray from the topic after just a few sentences. The problem is particularly noticeable on Stanford's essays because Stanford has the longest essays of any of the schools. (And, ironically enough, Harvard has the shortest.)
6 z+ g1 p7 ]8 L0 A& X2 t5 p/ K9 v7 C# }3 ^. w) z0 x
(3) Writing Style and Voice# [$ V5 G7 e# F( }
! w% J* ~% v" C+ [
Application essays are the dead verb graveyards of the English language. Most of the essays I see are stiff, passive, and unnecessarily formal because applicants choose to use passive verb constructions. The voicing makes me wonder about the applicant's personality. (Do I really want to sit next to this guy for the next two years? Is this guy going to be able to interact effectively with his classmates? What kind of dork would write like this?)
9 t; m! [; O" ^# Y  U& t+ z, |( I+ w6 p
Loosen up. It's okay to substitute "it's" for "it is" and "I'm" for "I am." Some contractions, however, are a bit too informal and should probably be avoided. For instance, I would try not to use the contraction "you'll" in an application essay. It's too informal. (Even though I use it in this Web site.)
3 b$ L( y% V! |, K. H) G  {" @% |) Y
Don't be too stiff but, at the same time, don't get too loose. You don't want to be talking about your "posse" or what a "fossilized old goat" you think Peter Drucker is. The voice you use in your essays should sound professional but, at the same time, it should be a little informal. Try to imagine the voice you would use if you were interviewing at the school. 7 ?* o' I% k2 z
* ?  S( f0 u! a3 a0 b
You also don't want to sound chatty or use a lot of slang. I'm sure an admissions officer would think twice about any applicant who described his school as "bitchin" or who stooped to "Valley Talk." ("I'm totally excited about coming to Wharton." Don't laugh, I've heard this voice many times in application essays.)! {5 I5 v0 g8 R

(4) Word Limits & the Optional Essay6 T" e6 W. H8 N2 q( D

2 [/ _# j2 z) i+ s  H7 TMost schools are serious about their assigned essay lengths. You can exceed the limits by 50 words or so, but 100 words is pushing it. That's especially true at Harvard, where the essays are very short.
( m+ d8 g0 \5 U' A" I; k% x+ j8 w9 o/ B2 x) ]
Also, writing a long diatribe for the optional essay (which usually goes something like, "Tell us anything else you think we should know.") is a sure way to tick your reader off. I've heard a dozen admissions directors asked about the optional essay, and every one of them said the same thing: "Don't use it unless you have to. And if you have to, then be brief."
& R2 m1 I- j0 s5 Z7 R7 |7 L* Q1 E5 C" l1 r7 o0 t9 L  U
The optional essay is not a forum for you to unload all of your insecurities about applying to B-school. ("I'm sorry for my grades in college, but I was on drugs a lot and I didn't know what I was doing.") Use it only to explain something that is important but that wasn't addressed elsewhere in the application.
8 w2 R6 i: y4 v$ n! A
3 ^4 J* k6 U/ ]) q0 ?: A: jAnd the optional essay doesn't have to be about something negative (though it usually is). If you are going to use it to explain sub-par grades, don't whine or make excuses. Tell your story and then shut up. + q9 m/ N4 D5 H
8 Z2 s+ y2 d+ y9 p2 T$ @1 W
Even if your optional essay is going to be about something good, don't ramble on. Be brief and to-the-point.7 F% W7 V4 L4 H5 M/ J3 S2 s2 M7 W

(5) "Kitchen Sinking". b4 Q0 f' u+ W% l

This is a common practice. Applicants hope to "hit" on a secret trigger topic that the admissions people are looking for - those special buzz words that will throw open the gates of Stanford. * W) k) [% v3 [# }

+ g, K9 P, L# l# X% W" m8 kThere is no such thing as a trigger topic, and by throwing in everything but the kitchen sink, you dilute the force of your essay. Rather than a well focused discourse that addresses two or possibly three important themes, the kitchen sinker produces a rambling laundry list of unrelated issues that make no lasting impression on the reader.
% _2 f- {7 Z6 G0 @1 C8 n8 u6 P% L; o" i
Choose one or two topics to address in each essay and stick to them. The reader has hundreds of essays to get through, so try to give him only a few simple themes to remember about you.

If you speak a second language, say so in your essays. Don't bury that talent in the application paperwork and ignore it elsewhere. Admissions people may not always see it in the paperwork, and even if they do, they might not put it into the context of your career goals. Speaking a second language is a significant advantage when applying, so be sure to bring it up at least once in your essays.1 J6 F, h. U: ?  h' @
